See, for all the people who go straight to the motives of the OP, not one person might be prepared to even contemplate that filling up Liberty with people "roleplaying" mercenaries may not be necessarily a good thing.
Let me guess.... flying a Sabre? (You would be amazed at how much an increase in use of this particular ship there has been these last months)
Codes? Well, thank heavens for aim and the fact that they aren't limited on the techchart.
I suppose the main rreason for the Q-Q as you put it may in fact be a combination of "I just got killed" and an actual grievance. Most of these hired killers that one has the misfortune to encounter in game lack style.
Yeah, mercenary roleplay. Kill everything for money. The truth, as always, is far more complex and varied. Coming from a country that produced its fair share of mercenaries, I can tell you that it isn't always about money. Politics and religion come into it too.
' Wrote:edit: You are misinformed. The mercenaries were sanctioned for explicitly demanding credits which was prohibited by their ID. Bribery is still a viable option, however holding a gun to someone's head and saying "Pay or die" lacks the subtlety of a bribe.
Who would have thought that killing for money required such sophistication?
Sure Athenian, so basically from my reading it seems like a merc can say, "hey why don't you offer me a sum of money to let you go" and then they either have to accept the amount offered or kill the guy. Where the two particular mercs went wrong is that they said "We don't think thats enough, if you want us not to kill you it needs to be this much."
So as I read it, you can say you are open to a bribe but cannot set the amount or negotiate over it. I guess negotiating a bribe is too much like piracy.
Am I reading the cloudy admin ruling on this matter right?
The ruling, if you read what Cannon wrote at the end, was more complicated than a simple "No you don't" though.
Quote:Mercenary ID
Pilot carrying this ID is a Mercenary, who :
Can trade and escort traders
Can fulfill lawful and unlawful bounty contracts
Cannot pirate, but can provide security services for pirates who are pirating if paid to do so. Mercenaries can only fire on traders or smugglers in self-defense or if the trader or smuggler fires on or is bountied by the mercenary's employer.
Cannot demand contraband unless specified in employer's bounty
Cannot use any transports with more than 3,800 cargo
Allowed ships: Fighters, Freighters, Transports, Gunboats
Carrying unmounted IDs in your ship, as well as not equipping an ID, is a serious crime.
My own personal take on it is that the prohibition is to prevent a bored mercenary ID'd player from sitting on a lane and extorting folk without cause as opposed to extortion with cause.
The wording could be clearer to reflect that distinction. The wording now means no piracy, which we can take to be requesting or asking for credits or cargo. Which makes no sense if you are a hired gun who wants as much money as one of those spoiled teens on My Super Sweet Sixteen, but plenty of sense if you are the type who might conceivably never get a job again as you are too unreliable to get the job done. (a career hired soldier).
I'm sure it makes sense to let mercs steal your shoes rather than kill you, but our rules lack that sophistication, primarily because the lowest common denominator ends up ruining everyone's day.
So should we add a line saying "Can extort credits from potential targets". What's stopping them from killing someone after taking the money? Pirates have to let someone go after they meet a demand. I wonder if the ID needs that freedom, considering the freedom it has now? Or is it currently unduly restricted? People who fly mercs could be more forthcoming with thoughts on that. It's a shame they have to spend their time posting kills when they could be writing other roleplay stuff - I think that adds to the perception of mercenaries as two-dimensional.
But from this thread, the kind of mercenaries who would even contemplate an interaction involving a discussion with a target don't appear to be the problem.
Note: When you swich from thread to thread and post "OMG Q_Q more omg" you are not helping anything, nor it makes you looks cool and wise. Just annoying. Like fly that circles around your head while you are trying to eat lunch outside. That sort of annoying.
Anyway. People say "Don't go to Liberty" ... Invalid argument. The game is, more or less, centered around Liberty. No matter what you do, you have to go trough Liberty at least (with exceptions of course), also if you don't go to Liberty, you may spend hours without even meeting anyone, which is... well. Not good. Is Liberty exception in rules? Wasn't that just on system beginning with letter C?
Of course, Liberty is screwd up right now. There is blanket bounty on just... everyone. Good way to make it more PvP, less RP and lure every roflcopter from Sirius looking for money.
I don't think it's "whinning" it's just how it is. What can we do with it? That's the question and problem. And even bigger problem is, that some, even more seasoned people of disco came to like it more than "RP" ... So yes, Discovery PVP 24/7 is right around the corner, now I'm just wondering if we'll go there.
I buy things I don't want to make an impression on people I don't like.

No, not misinformed. I read the sanction and read the admin ruling.
It all came down to word play. Had the two players in question worded things differently they would have been perfectly fine.
I'm the captain from bounty hunter GB wich atacked you. Why ??? Because i'm getting sick of pirates. You was near California jump gate in New York pirating. On your first words "Hold please mate..." can be seen you was at pirating. Dont say you not was. If i not catch you when pirating sure you could pirate later.
Quote:For clarification, I had a Pirate ID. So It would come under " Kill every Pirate In Liberty " - bounty Board.
But come'on.. I attempted to RP for a while, I mewan I had a Slave Liner, I was near enough defenceless. I was attempting to RP before getting my ass owned to a Bounty Hunter GB, and a Roc bomber.
You said your liner was defenceless. This is true if in your face is a gunboat and a bomber. But in face of a trader who is defenceless ? I was captain of a slave liner and i know how powerfull is.
You was lucky because when you jumped in California i couldn't stop you because i forgot to buy CD
Anyway if this make you to feel better i killed another 2 pirates in way to coronado for the same reason
Ky-Kiske you are terribly wrong. You cannot make such conclusions about all pirates because you are "sick of it" When you are sick of it just rage-quit.People are here to have fun remember that. Not all pirates are that bad. I am sick of pirates don't excuse you for the bad RP.
The point of the Wolf guy is valid but not legit one.
Since you have slave liner and ton of hull bots/bats/11 turrets you are nod defenceless at all- with capital armour higher mark and some skills you can run from bomber and GB, and even do little damage to them since they are new players and forgot to buy CDs I would actually may be kill one of them running. Since you are unlawful and camp the lines witch is considered as pirating attempt you could get trouble from lawfuls.
If you think that someone somehow broke any rule report him. They indeed haven't RPed at all but it happens all the time.
Today BWT transport that I(Outcast Fighter) tried to rob in Kuyshu docked escorted at Cali claiming that he would sell his cargo there- our RP agreement. Then he didn't sell it and made successful run on bots /bats to Java. There he docked and simply logged off.I have the screens and etc. but I will let it be do you know why? He is not worth my time and nerves to explain to him what he did wrong/post Q_Q in forums/ sanctions etc. There are a lot of idiots around and you just start to notice it- just ignore it- on the other hand there are a lot decent players who RP and fight and respect the others.
This is shooter game if you don't like it you stlll can RP in the forums without actually playing the game or you can hunt that hunters/put huge bounty on them etc.

well i have a merc....and yes i do attempt to rp some before killing someone
earlier today i almost ended up blasting vps-miner into space dust because he was threatening my clients due to a mismatch in opinions about whether he should be payed on the spot or not
of course all of this was in rp so it was quite interesting
even while chasing someone down i attempt to rp
even though with alot of typos due to the fact that i was chasing with one hand and typing with the other...i managed to spout off alot of short rp messages to some bretonians that were attempting to stop me from killing a noamd that i had chased from california and was ordered to kill by lcbo frozen star
