Not so interested in the code any more. What would be useful would be the right to use the story and infocards in a new engine without fear of legal action. The FL engine is getting terribly dated (and see my follow up below - great work)

Erg, that's not what I meant. Microsoft Public License is good - I was just referring to the fact that the MC2 release wasn't full - it didn't have networking support nor rights to the artwork. My bad, I'd go back to edit but you already quoted me
nice dude!
Very nice!
and kudos for ignoring all the useless spam and actually sticking to the topic of which you created this thread in the first place!
if theres anything i can do to help, please let me know.

Why would there be any fear of legal action?
Has LucasArts sued Freeworlds for making a Star Wars version of Freelancer? is there any precedent for Microsoft putting an injunction on third-party mods?
For Microsoft to sue - there would have to be money involved - money they would be missing out on. Apart from a few donations to the server operations, this is not a profit-making venture. Microsoft does not have any current offering for the Freelancer world for people to be spending their money on - nor do they have any global servers anymore.
Remember too Cannon - as Discover forges its own path, it gets further away from plain Vanilla on which it is based. I put it to you, that it wouldnt take much to deviate from Vanilla to the point where Disco stands on its own merits (Gallia as a case in point).
The Halo mod for FL was shut down by Microsoft after they threatened legal action.
Yes, but they were planning to create their own extension of Halo (obviously), and from what I can tell, the newest one coming out deals a lot with in-space action.
I don't think they will gripe if we take a dead-end storyline as far as they're concerned and bring it somewhere new.
Unless they are indeed planning FL2, in which case, that's fine too. I guess we'll find out early in that case.
Edit: Oh, also, Ingenious, awesome letter to them. Looks very professional and proper. Great work.

Wishing you best luck,

I actually emailed a follow up a couple days ago. Nothing. Maybe I'll try the other guys again.
I was actually looking at this thread again yesterday. Funny coincidence, was thinking of bumping it myself. Thanks for the effort! I didn't say it earlier, but it's pretty damn good start that you got a reply from the lead dev of FL.
