Seems I made a good decision by killing off my MRG character. Every time he needed to identify himself, I would need to use a set message. This was his name, plus rank and titles: Contre-Amiral Pierre Vincent Dupetit-Thouars, Vicomte du Plateau des Coucous, Chevalier de Port-aux-Perles.
Maybe we could try and make it so that you're not allowed to use set messages as notice of attack and if proof is obtained they could be sanctioned for doing so whilst limiting the amount of setmsg's to 3 so that people, like thunderer, can use them to identify them selves.
Also I remember setmsg being used to spam chats rather intensely in the past.
I'm kind of in favour of this. But at the same time I see the value of keeping Setmsg and allowing the use of macros to paste messages.
But yes using it to quickly give notice of attack when someone is mid sentence and dodging all possible RP kinda sucks. I might not RP on the forums too much if not at all but in game it's just:
"You're evil. "
*setmsg with notice of attack*
This is not lazy, and indeed contribute. You jus should stop measure "contibution" and "creativity" by snowflake chars.
For example, coalition military character response should be rather "Est!" "Tak tochno, comrade commander!". What the creativity you speak about?)
My main argument - here much players who use setmsgs as tool to write immersive common phrases to not delay encounter and not ruin dynamic. They do contribute, they log and play their average joe roles. (i just personally know at least 2-3 players who good at RP(play alot in different tabletops dnd-alike games) but their english flow not so good yet to respond in reasonable time, and another players openly tell them this in game. Most of players here dont want wait minutes for regular patrol/inspection posts.
Another situation where its used - when you need bring somebody attention fast, with intention to turn situation in elaborated encounter. That how most of law enforcers use it. Withou setmsgs their phrases will be reduced to "STAPH CRIMINAL SCUM", without "right there" part even. So meaningful. So will change anything in good direction.
There are players in the server whose ability to communicate in english is in question. That is probably why this measure has been taken.
Furthermore you don't need a setmessage to tell a trader to halt engines, there's no need to say anything when CD'ing someone. If you're worried a trade might just cruise away as fast as possible CD them and then type halt your engines. You'll have plenty of time to write that. It is a shame that I won't be able to mark targets in groupfights with /g1 anymore though.
