Thoughts: There would be no 12 months or days or weeks or years. That is an Earth time frame....
....
So two options that I can see so far.
1) a Startrek type one based off a universal...thing.. Stardate 266374.202.
2) Earth style 6th Fruly, 816 - AS 816.445.12 - 12.445.816 AS
Is there a timeframe style already set in game, (one that makes sense,)?
Youd still need to use the month, day, and a 24 hour clock for ease of use for all.
Id suggest basing it on the time zone the server resides in. That way screen shots with the time on them would allow Admins to find the exact times in any log files if any investigation was needed without having to convert the time.
It's useful for time because it's got both a 24hr and 12hr clock, and has the time down to the second. It's displayed in any corner or in the middle of the side of the screen.
I use it for timestamps on my screenshots more than to see who's talking on teamspeak.
It's also a really small download, about 1.8 mb and takes up nearly 0 system resources.

See this wouldnt really work, as it has been stated the main draw to this would be that it is a universal server time. This program would just post your own time zone defeating the point of doing this at all.
Plus if people just wanted to know the time, they could minimise FL and check the computer clock. Or their watch. Or a clock.
For events this wouldn't really make any big difference since people can convert times etc.
It's a gimmick, but a nice one:P
I agree with a couple of the earlier posters in regards to the time format. We do need some way to track months, days and actual time based on real time, so people can convert the Sirius Standard Time (SST, or SUT, whatever it winds up getting called) in order to make it simpler for people to know when things are going to happen.
In startrek, their stardates were just mere dates. Replacement for months and years, that I agree, were only relative to earth and the Sol system. Which is why they developed it in the first place.
In the star wars universe, they use "standards". Every culture has their own measurements for years ect. Just like how the US is nutso and uses Feet, yards and miles while almost every other country in the world uses the metric system.
Essentially what I am getting at, in the universe as large as Freelancer planetary governments would band together, at the very least to create a common unit of time for everyone. This time would be similar to military time measurements, based on counting the hours and not specific times like (9AM). Essentially what they would hope to achieve through something like that is exactly what we are doing here, trying to organize several different governments for a more simple ease-of-action.
Now, as for the clock, the way I want to design it is have two varients. A military style version, for those that are into that, and a "standard" 12-12 version, for those that prefer a simpler approach.
Now to get into the "AM-PM" or "12-12" version of the clock, AM & PM would be renamed, to what, I'm unsure of at this point. The reason this would need to be changed is because PM means "Post Meridiam" which has to do specifically with earth, and we all know that people outside earth aren't going to use that. Also AM stands for Ante-Meridam, which is also specific to earth. Now these could potentialy still be used, but why not go the extra step and create our own as a community.
Anyways I'm hyper... Been at my new job for a week and I already have a presentation scheduled next week for taking my department paperless!:DSo yeah, I'm too excited to continue concentrating on this so I'll continue later after I calm down! Ya'll have fun.
isnt it England that uses the Imperical system. anyway ytea it sounds good since converting times can be really annoying especcialy with british summer time and daylight savings and all that stuff
I agree. Which is why I think we should use the servers time, because as far as I know... that part of the world doesn't observe daylight savings, or does it? I'm not entirely sure. I'm looking into a way to at the very least create a webpage with the customized SST/SUT clocks.

At first I was going to disagree with Vero, but after thinking about it...hes right. The Admins also need to be taken into consideration here. Veros way, they can track things easier. I think a time based on the server timezone is what's needed.
Amon if we used the server time, it would be universal in game. You can say in game 5 hours from now or whatever.
I was going to suggest Standard units like in startrek, but ANY system that we use will still need to be converted into local time frames if we want coordinated attacks/trades/rendezvous - so your point is moot.
I do like the idea of having Units rather than minutes but it just might be more of a hassle than anything, to use any other system than server time.
