Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'd like to point out this can be done in Vanilla freelancer, and of course, discovery.
It's a simple matter of setting the keys in your options, and pressing them while in cockpit view (CNTRL + V is the default hotkey for sockpit view).

No, in Vanilla it isn't so simple. Disco had to enable these keys (make them configurable). You won't find these keys in options in unmodded (vanilla) FL at all.
To add on what Marvin has said, if you've activated Discovery on your computer then even if you de-activate it, Vanilla Freelancer will still use the new key-set Discovery installed. This includes pitch/turn, verticle strafe, a free-flight button, the ability to change your 'fire all' button, rolling, sub-targeting, swapping between radar and that 'wire frame' view of your target, and weapon grouping as well.
If you play Vanilla on a PC that has never installed Discovery, the option to roll will not be available to you.

If you mean use of Auto-Level to roll your ship back to being right-side up with the normal plane after doing a flip....... you can do that outside of cockpit view as well.
If you mean rolling using the Roll keys, then no, modding is required as those keys are disabled otherwise.

Uninstall Discovery and Freelancer and remove all configuration files, then try it...
