I had the same idea about the clock myself, because saying simply "816.AS. A convoy was attacked...." Isnt the right way to go it seems...
I do not think, it would be needed to have it implemented ingame, Simply a little window on the forums with a "Good mor/eve/ing/afternoon/anything. Its xx:xx xxxx 816 AS." would be enough. A single Alt+Tab and back...
The thing that concerns though is the format of time.
The standard 12 months with 28/29/30/31 days per month will probably not work. Why? It is based on physics from our Solar system. On the Earths rotation and all the things around. In FL, Earth is no more (at least as we know it.).
Because of this, somekind of a "stardate", similar to Startrek would be nice... The stardate might be counted for example like this:
one AS year would be from 1st January to 31st December looking like this:
1st Jan: 00:00 - Sirius time: 00000.00 816 AS
31th Dec 23:59 - Sirius time: 99999.99 816 AS
Maybe too complicated, but it only is an example to brainstorm with.
Also, since the time should be based on something (Usually planet rotations and travels around space...), the time could be divided into "timezones", like:
Sirius time (Similar to Manhattan time for example)
Manhattan time.
New London time.
New Berlin time.
New Tokio time.
Maybe even some "timezones" like Omega time, Tau time, Omicron time would be nice....
Yes this idea has been covered and I can understand your viewpoint as I toyed with the same notion myself. However, this clock has to be functional rather than purely fitting with RP. Setting the time to the Server time is the best way to do that. This way Admins can track screen shot times and the clock is easy to understand. lets not lose sight of what this clock is really to be used for, to help people plan in game events beyond anything else. For that purpose while aesthetics should be taken into account, they are not the focus, usability is.

"Seeing as I have been getting better and better at programing small....'toys'.. I don't see why I couldn't give this a try. Shouldn't be very hard, all I need to do is create a small program to display a time, and force it to hook inside of Freelancer. Once I know how to create an in-game hook, like Xfire does, It should take me under 5 minutes...

Hi.
I think the use of a FL in game time format is not workable...
People would have to think in increments of that time format to plan events into the future or speak of events just passed...
Too complicated when converting between RL time and FL time.
Stick to the GMT Real-Life time and just call it the Solar time...RPing a server time format is too complicated an option, I think.
People will have to get out a calculator or ms excel to work out when an event will occur in two days time @ 6pm GMT...
If all else fails, the Simplest Solution is usually the best!

I agree whole heartedly about the simple solution being best, and I think it should be put to a vote whether the clock should be set to GMT time or server time. Really the only bonus for server time is that it could help out admins when looking at screen shots. I don't see it as too complicated to look at the in game clock and then glance at the clock on your computer or one sitting next to you. No matter the time the clock is set to its pretty easy to sink up, no math no calculating. "when its 5 o'clock in game its 3 o'clock here". However, for planning events further down the line GMT could be easier as figuring out long run time could prove a little more difficult. So I post this as a question to all, what time should be clock be set to? GMT or Server?
- Does anyone know how to set up one of the vote things at the top?
- After thought I cast my vote for GMT as that seems to be what people are used to using in this game.
Well I am gathering the necessary materials to make the program, mostly border images to make the clock look like a Freelancer window. The coding is painfully easy. The program will have a button to switch between REAL time and Freelancer time. Currently all I have left to add are borders, In-Game hooking, and a verification of WHICH FREAKING TIME WE ARE GOING TO USE FOR INGAME TIME! Thank you. I will post a demo on here when I am ready.
While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack http://pastebin.com/SYQXBufs

If its done in server time then it will be harder for players to be able to work out what time it is in his Time Zone, as its much simpler to convert GMT. From my understanding the point of the clock idea is ment to be primarily for players knowing when events will happen, so imo it should be based on whats simplest for Players to use.

Seeing as it will switch, use the 24Hour time format, and for the date just make it a seven digit number, separated by a dash. Eg today would be 1006816, yesterday was 0906816, etc. So, for me, it would now be 1714-1006816. If you wanted to do seconds, just make it 1714:47-1006816
EDIT: Make sure the time itself (the 1714:47, if you use that) is GMT.

Well then i think the call has been made. The clock will be set to the above time format. Unless anyone disagrees, Single Earred Dude please go ahead with making it GMT. Thank you for your help once agian! I am really glad to see this all coming together.:) Does anyone think this clock could be released as a patch, or will it have to wait till the next mod?
As far as I last understood, Single eared dude was going to investigate
making one. I'm all for this, but currently have no DirectX/FL modding capability.
I''m sure I could learn, but im not doing that just for a clock:)
