It depends, all the houses do it differently.

Liberty has the Lib navy so I suppose the Lib air force is a seperate command structure, same for kusari.

Rhienland and Bretonia have "Military" and "Armed Forces" So I would assume that this central command controls the space, air, land, and sea forces - everything used to fight a war. We just dont see them in aircraft cos you cant go into a planets atmoshphere unassisted without exploding.

Bottom line, the air force dont belong in spcaeships, maybe hybrids so they can chase hostiles that head into space for short range, but not pure spacecraft. That's for the space forces.

Well ... to be honest yes.

The entire storyline, ship designs/names, place designs/names, faction names, ... Actually I won't waste my time listing everything in the entire game.

The whole thing could be completely summed up as "Because some guys at Microsoft decided thats how it will be". After all they did make the game, and since its a game based on a future that is increadibly unlikely to happen or was impossible for them to predict it is very likely its "just based on one guys imagination."

I spose just because something isen't mentioned isen't grounds for it to not exist. But since we never see it odds are they're atleast not in space worthy ships.

That.

And I don't understand why you're so mad about the name.
I like the idea/concept, and in my opinion, the name isn't that important.

Liberty Air Force just sounds pro, so why not?

It's far more common in science fiction for vessels in space to be part of a space "navy." Stargate is pretty unique in having it come out of the air force, but it is logical that a space force would grow out of the air force.

A space military in the far future is so far removed from modern day Earth conventions that it doesn't really matter what you call it.

The "air force" faction might as well be called the "snub brigade" or "fighter corps"--at least those names reflect what the faction actually does, while "air force" has nothing to do with what they'll actually be doing in game.

I was going to try explain it myself but this sums it up perfectly really.

Air Force just doesn't sound right, especially when they're flying LN tags.

As to why space craft are usually considered Navy I can hazard a guess.

Smaller ships seem to be givern Aircraft names and larger ships given Ship names. I can only assume its something to do with thier size, and what with people in power seeming to lack any imagination they just call them after something that already exists. And since Battleships, Cruisers and Dreadnoughts are more powerful than Fighters, Bombers and Gunships the name stuck with them.

As far as the Freelancer devs were concerned, Army = Navy = Air Force = Marines.

In popular fiction, Naval terms and naval organization is used for spaceborne forces because the Navy is the closest and has the easiest translatable chain of command of all military services for the subject of large vessels with large crews.

And then of course, there is the whole 'space is an ocean' theme that is very very popular in science fiction.

EDIT: Just to note, the only issue I have with your idea, Ava, is the fact that you're calling it the Air Force, and not the Space Force.

Characters
Alan Markson: The Hellfire Legion's Lord Commander
The Perihelion: Freeport Four's guardian, and yet much more. Missing and assumed Lost with all hands.
Eric Dresmund: Junker, smuggler, thief. Last seen drunk on Beaumont
Vayrn Wyard: IMG Recon pilot turned Neo-Terran Captain. Last location unknown

I believe, space force/navy would sound better... in space.

What if...it was actually the air force that did it all...but was renamed to the Navy by the government ?

Hello, ever thought of that ?

Why do we need an air force if we have technology that allows both atmospheric and non-atmospheric flight at the same time ?

Or, the guys at Microsoft simply like the term Navy more and decided to troll players that like realism over..well..the gaming universe.

I see mention of spaceships a lot here. This isn't lore. It isn't some guys imagination from yesteryear.
There are references to vessels that travel amongst the stars as ships all over this language.
Airforce refers to vessels that operate in the air specifically, don't they?
A ship is a vessel which travels through any medium except land (I think). Even camels are referred to as ships! (Tongue is in cheek here).
All aircraft are ships but not all ships are aircraft.

Having said all that, if you wanted to name a faction 'The LAF' I see no harm in that. There are far more odd things, even faction names that people get away with here.
You could for example form a Gallic or Bretonian outfit named the 'Armed Royal Service Engineers' but there are shed loads of names that people will find issue with.
I would point out that a group fighting and winning against you might be accused of 'having a LAF' but thats entirely my perspective I suppose :D

Either way, I wish the very best of luck to you.

For the record, my opinion of the various other branches of the military in liberty appearing is as follows:

While the army, marines, air force and so on, would rarely have a considerable space presence, there is little to stop people from attempting to represent them in game. The only problem is with attempting to distinguish them from the Navy.

This is the issue with any and all factions who essentially fly on the same side - their behaviour will be much the same, and defining their role is difficult.

Trying to define seperate roles for the navy, police and LSF has been the source of debate (sometimes heated debate) between the LN, LPI and LSF.

If you can represent it well, and find something specific for them to do, then all power to you.
