' Wrote:2nd - as much as I'm an RTS playa, I prefer seeing the units from up close and piloting them myself if possible (BattleZone anyone?
I realize a lot of the trailers of EVE make this misconception. When you see about 100-200 ships jumping/warping into a battle with another 100-200 ships, it makes it seem like someone is controlling them all.. In reality, what your seeing is a seperate person controlling each small ship.. Each person can own as many ships as they want, but only fly one at a time. Biggest engagement I've been in was when we invaded a constellation to destroy an enemy's starbases and gain sovereignty of the three star systems. We faced off against the defence fleet (and the people that were controlling the station's gun emplacements) of 210 ships (75 battleships). We had about 115. (40 Battleships, 7 Dreadnaughts, and 12 carriers:D) We beat the crap out of them too.. Anyway, what your seeing actually IS 200 people fighting 200 other people. You are very close to your ship and control every part of it. Now, you can't tell it; 'Turn right, turn left, etc' like you can in FL, but you can tell it to orbit another ship at xxxx range, or approach ship, keep at xxxx range, and so-on. You tell it what guns to shoot ad at what target. What modules to turn on (like afterburner, armor/shield repairers, armor hardeners (resistance to damage types), and what to target, etc.
The only time you really control something big or multiple things, is when you take control of a space station. You control all the guns and other modules, like warp disrupters, webifiers, target painters/disrupters, etc. Multiple people can do this though, like have 33% of the guns being controlled by one person, and another 33% by another, and yet one more controlling the other 1/3 of the guns. But you'll never have control of multiple ships and you have alot of control over what that ship does.
The game is actually a simulator and not a RTS. When you own an alliance or corporation, it can seem like an RTS because you literially ARE running a strategy concerning other people that control other alliances. And your pilots are actually real people who do things differently, and not mindless computers that follow the orders of 'move here.'
Nerf Herder here, shifting everything to Scruffy.
I went ahead and paid for it, much to the disgust of my wife. tried to get a character named Nerf, and it turned out, there is a clan named 'Nerf', so that wasn't to work out for me. A reason I am playing, is my ping is running very high for the discovery servers right now, almost 2000. and it seems not to bother EVE. Got a character playing who is still learning electronics so i can use some of the loot I've picked up, like ECM, CPU modules and other packages found off dead characters, whose ships were left and their cargo and equipment were still in their wrecks.

I blew this guy up, he had no loot what so ever!!?? What up with that????
Hey Dab, How long did it take for you to get to that position in EVE?
scruffy
Some npcs like that one dont always drop loot same thing happens when you blow up a player in the explosion not all the loot is safe some gets destroyed in the explosion:)
i have 2 accounts and love the game it dose take awhile to train certian skills ect thats why i play fl and other games while my char learns new skills. both my chars have 10mil skill points and char ones is getting his first heavy assault ship tomorrow;) also he flys force recon ships. and my other char has a decked out raven sheild tanker also flys stealth bombers and interceptors.
P.S. i am looking for a more active corp for one of my chars so if interested send a mail in eve to Kingofnight2 or Set'essh
One day I took a mission and the trip to the objective took 3 hours, During that time I left my ship in autopilot and went outside with some friend. When I came back I was Drifting in space and my ship was blown off...
and also the fact that it take Real life time to upgrade skills (24hrs) that was just too boring, I love to work for my stuff,,,not to wait
And You must pay to play online...
PS: I played the first EVE(no expansions)shortly after it came out so thing might have changed
But now I'm waiting for A beta of Infinity: The quest for earth
I thought about starting with EVE twice...first time when it came out... second time this summer....
and never started... here are the reasons:
1. It costs money......... was an issue long then... kind of got over it this summer.. (btw. I would be able to play for quite a long time with the money I donated to disco.
2. It takes real time to develop skills..... makes it time consuming to come to some level...
3. Death penalty .... while it fits RP... it makes fights much more personal... with real hatred and the like...
4. The ammount of time/money you have is quite important..... in disco it takes some time to get from the real newbie level.. but equipped fighter/bomber doesn't really cost that much... then it's all about your skill and ability to learn
Seasoned EVE players feel free to prove me wrong on any of the points.

Iv eplayed eve for about 1.5 years now and i agree with you those are the downfalls of the game but to me the depth and the completly player driven economy makes it worth it. a good rule for playing eve dont fly what you cant afford the replace. and if you get ina good alliance/corp they will help you replace the ships if not provide them for you. for example my corp just provided me with 250mil isk woth of gear last night. because my battle ship(my mony making ship) is currently pinned down in a war zone... so it all depends on what you think is worth it for the downfalls as witha ny game:)

Incoming EVE Vet for 4 years.
1. Yeah it costs money, big woop, you're basically paying for the server costs and continued development. Unlike some MMO's EvE is constantly being developed and releases FREE expansion packs all the time, in fact they released the new graphical upgrade for free a few weeks back. People who cry about it costing money are usually ones without jobs(aka kids) and usually cry "I WONT BUY A GAME TWICE", your paying for the server costs, EvE has one of the biggest Supercomputers in the world being used to a server. This isn't some guys Pentium 4 in a garage this is some serious s***!
2. Don't take it negatively, it allows you to gain skills while your doing other stuff. EvE is made for both the casual and the "i virtually have no life" gamer. If your too busy to play while doing other stuff, you can still get your skills up, but if you have time to play. You can get your wallet up. Your wallet is very important in EvE so theres no such thing as 'wasting time'. I also like to point out another complaint of "EVERYONES BEEN PLAYING LONGER THEN ME", yes, this means they'll have more skill points, does this mean they'll beat you? If they're a better player, yes. EvE allows a 4 month player the ability to beat a 4 year one, the only uperhand the 4 year player has is the same in every mmo. Experience, versatility(and sometimes a wallet, I however am very broke:()
3. Man get into PVP, EvE's pvp is probably the best in the Ultima online style, CCP originally just started off with a bunch of guys that used to play Ultima and go around griefing a lot, so join in on the adrenaline rushing fun of pvp, EvE's pve is utter crap compared to what goes on in the PVP aspect of it. Massive wars, tricks, betrayal. Not to mention it forces people to roleplay without even thinking they are. It's great, while the loss of a ship is tragic, after a while you get used to it(I've lost about 10 or so ships that were significant(Aka not a frigate))
Just downloaded the trial, i have to say this game is way much better than i thought.. graphics are great, game seems quite hard atm, tutorial is great and awesome story line. When my 14 days are up i might choose to pay;).
