We can agree a fighter is suboptimal against a transport, yes. A bomber is better. No doubt. Never said anything to imply otherwise.
I'm just pointing out that if you get caught in your trannie (even with the battle- prefix) far from a safe haven, even a lone fighter can make you into minced meat.
Your safest bet as a trader is not "more guns" but RP (and/or a junker ID or a Zoner ID - I had a Whale with 1 gun (or is it none?) and I got stopped but never had to cough up any money for several months) - none of the transports were made for proper fighting, and I think that is a good thing.
Edit: Proper SOLO fighting, that is. I haven't met battletrannies in convoys, but I could imagine that it would be a force to be reckoned with.

1 Fighter vs P-trans? nope. I have covered 60K in my Shire against 1 lone Sabre. Everytime he came in range i knocked out his shields, and he backed off to regen. He tried to get in close a few times for sustained fire/mines, but lost alot of hull. I just kept thrusters on full towards base, and non stop firing. Lost 2/3 bots is all.
You keep in a straight line, full thrust and the fighter cannot do enough sustained damage to keep shields down, and hurt hull. Especially a sabre with its powercore.
You want a fighter that hurts trans? Try corsair Titan with 2 class 10 Shield busters/ 2 class 10 missiles/2 class 9 missiles, and a Nuke dropper. Shield busters rape the shield and can go non stop with titan, then 4 different missiles just knock off all trans gear piece by piece including Thruster. 4 different missiles is also 280 rounds of ammo, so 1 on 1 no ammo shortage. Most trans give up after a few turrets fall off.

Problem here is, a skilled sabre will be able to avoid getting it's shield knocked off; considering you meet a skilled solo-sabre-pirate you would probalby just be able to make 1/2 to 2/3's of the way.
The only problem a sabre will ever have against a BTrans, is it's lack of firepwer to actually take it down.
The problems of bomber is, that they are less maneuverable and therefore easier to hit; with the nerfed SNAC range a bomber would need to close on a distance inside the Type 3's firing range, therefore taking a lot of hits.
A simple Bowex vhf killed my cap4 Slave Liner once...so yes, they could rape a transport.
Finally I made a decision and bought an Uruz. Tested it at Connecticut and it works well. I took down a cruiser shield with it and damaged its hull while he shoot on me with cruiser weapons. Was fine against bomber too, since its shape makes it a hard target from behind. However it could survive, its always depends on your and your enemies skillls.
Summary: Uruz is the same like Shire as I realised, so a smart choice if somebody want to fight sometimes not just pay and run.

Yup my very first post in this topic. I said skill of both pilots can be win or loss to both. Now in a snub i am average. 50/50 win/loss. But in large ships i am good(not uber/awesome) and i usually hit what i fire at more often then miss. A sabre will lose it's shields in 2 hits from a B-trans. 12 turrets is 12K damage/6K shields.
As for a slave liner getting raped by a lone VHF? Nothing personel, but you cannot fly a big ship well. I have fended off 2 bombers in a Slave liner. Not kill them mind you, but enough damage they ran away instead of death.
Winning a fight does not always mean killing the other ship. Living to finght another day is a win in a transport. B-Trans exxel at living long enough to get safely to port.

Oh yea, this Convoy and IMG can attest to. A proper armed transport convoy with some armor on each transport can blast it's way through a gunboat ambush or the odd bomber pair without too much trouble. Most (solo) pirates tend to run when they see 3 combat-able transports work together... Wisely so too.
There's one more battletransie on the wishlist, by yours truly, for IMG (which lacks a proper big transport of it's own right now). For all intents and purposes it'll be similar to the Akegata class, with gunmounts in a triangular setup along the main spine.
[Edit]@above: Those bombers need to learn to subtarget your thruster. That gone, the liner's dead.
