Who blows up bases, and why?

Seeing as Cannon favors the "Space is dangerous, good luck" rule, I doubt that'll happen. Bases, if set up properly, have a massive defense and a lot of hitpoints to chew through. With 3 repair commodities the regen rate of a base is also very high, and a properly supplied shield makes the damn thing pretty much invulnerable. In other words, they are not easy to kill IF the owner knows what he's doing.

That an indy lolwhut base with barely any hitpoints and no supply bites the dust isn't something I care about personally. Lolcap. Lolbase. Goes boom just as quick.

Before devs (hopefully) add rules regarding bases, they will cause insane amount of QQ and oorp.

personally, I would like rules like:

1. Cannot destroy bases without decent rp reason (red reputation is not sufficient) like being irp hostile to base owner.

1.1 If base is indirectly causing harm to player/faction (like staging enemy attacks) player/faction may make reasonable demands through communication channel to base owner.In case demands are not fulfilled within 5 days player/faction may destroy base.
1.2 Pirates may pirate bases through communication channel, time limit for response is 3 days.

2.Official factions may restrict player bases within 15km from their npc bases and in their guard system.
2.1. Independent and faction players may restrict base building within 10km from their existing bases.
2.2 If base owner is not following restrictions, this is rp basis for destroying base.

3.Destroyer of base must make a forum post in special oorp thread within 7 days after bar destruction with place, time and reason of destruction.

3.1 In case rp of destroyer or the one who hired him is not sufficient, base is restored and aggressor is sanctioned for 200 mil.
Although I want to add something to base piracy section, I can't come up with decent ideas.

simple rules to base builders:
build it where it must be built, not when you want it
get a permission from faction that runs this sytem (or no if you built it in independent system)
make sure base is hidden enough so it cant be discovered assidentially (but dont make it 100k out of plane)
make sure you can built defence modules and supply your base often
dont build too many bases. base spam is annoying

Judging from what you said, AD, we should just get rid of all the engagement and piracy rules, since people are lolwuts anyway and why should we care if they can't defend themselves.

My point of view is:
As discovery is roleplay server, everything added must promote rp.All that bases do now is creating extreme cool but useless items that require insane amount of grind to get.Bad thing is, those who dare to use basis for rp get only giant disappointment in return.

Some folk are in favor of this. Personally, I'm not one of them. A game needs rules, if only to prevent people from behaving like idiots without any consequences.

As to bases... Well, considering bases are not assigned any IFF you can't visually confirm who they belong to. Which means most "valid roleplay" rules go out the window in determining if factions -may- attack those bases since no identification can be made. Defaulting the attack permission to yes as long as your character may operate in the area the base is in. (IE a Kusari Battleship attacking bases in Omega 5 would be kinda meh). Having to post a forum notification means you can't prevent a small base from growing before you get a reply. Some of these base establishment ideas are time-critical.

Bases if set up properly are strong enough to withstand the odd lone attacker. That string of explosions by people who were abusing a bug where spamming mines would make a base blow up in no time is over as that bug is fixed. You now need to chew through the 8 to 24 million hitpoints after the shield is down... Good luck!
If you witness an attack on a base and feel it's a violation of the attacker's ID, post a sanction or better yet, a message to the base owner and factions involved.

[Edit] But if you want these rules implemented, I'd make it a requirement to also announce the intention to establish a base before doing so, on the forum, including location. To allow opposing factions to initiate roleplay opposing the construction effort. "Cannot destroy bases without decent rp reason" -> "Cannot build bases without decent rp reason". Fair is fair.

Yeah, that would be fair, it's too bad it will be metagamed to hell. You can have a reason for a base without giving away the exact location At most the system should be specified. That would give the opposition a chance to sweep the area, or get swept away by defense patrols.

Yes this would improve the server a lot actually- then the traders would start to use escorts and fly in convoys- nothing worse in that really- that and all caps to official factions- it would make the place fresh and funny. Game mechanics can change 2/3 of rules- cruise drain- makes engagement notice not so important really, adjusting transport shields and capital ship guns to specific type removes cap vs transport rule.

Life would be much easier for my trader if the power to determine the quality, and therefor validity, of the motives of hostile persons was placed in my own hands rather than that of the aggressor.

I imagine that my internal calculations and newfound powers to quantify excellence would provide results that some external parties, unjustly I might add, consider heavily favorable to my own interests.

Space is dangerous, it's right there next to the link in Cannon's post. I feel that rules reflecting the finer points of bases will evolve over time, though likely none wil present themselves as the only real danger they currently represent is in the trade lane brick wall base. Notifications presented as to who made murders on you might be nice, as this is something which can die without your direct supervision. Furthermore a refinement to house laws dictating who may or may not build where and to what end and so on.

Personally I would treat the whole affair as it currently is like any other alpha release. Madhouse anarchy from which governing standards emerge on feeble legs coated with the muck from which they emerged. In the meantime someone's gonna climbing in yo windows, snatchin' yo bases up.
