Jake listens to the strange woman, intrigued. When she reaches a hand up to his face, he lets her touch, instead of flinching away. The noise of the music and chatter at the party slip away, Jake's vision changes, and scenes of an event, almost forgotten, play back with clarity. He remembered... 'Aurora?'
A voice spoke, breaking the silence.
"You already know the answer inside you but you refuse to conceive it as possible."
Sound and vision returned in an instant, loud music and lights assaulting his senses. Jake's mind was trying to process was would be done next. He had a thousand questions to ask, but the thing that came up first wasn't exactly the most important.
"So... I was hitting on an alien? Wait! Uh, ignore that part, why do you look so... Human, then? Is this the 'new vessel' you were talking about?"
Natalie stayed at the bar for some moments and looked around. All the people here were strangers for her, even though she knew some of them. 'And suddenly the wish to leave Liberty...' She shook her head and walked to the table where Greenson was waiting for her. 'Wrong moment for that, Nat. Wrong moment...'
"Is it just my imagination, or are you worried about something, Jas?" Natalie asked and sat down at the table.
Remus wasn't exactly sure what had just happened... it had either been drinking too much wine or what is reality playing tricks on him. Whatever it was, a flashback suddenly began to form in his mind. Nomads... Experiments.... Subjects... Case files He began to remember what he did before he joined up with the Primary Fleet.
"I reminded him of an event lost in a corner of his mind, like many things. There's nothing of dangerous, don't be afraid, it's just... the kind of things you can't do yourselves."
Being off-duty, he normally did not carry a firearm with him. But in the rare instance that happened to been kidnapped by a certain Junker, he had learned to become prepared to any kind of situation... Remus could still remember the teachings of his father in the art of dueling... it was an obsolete way of settling disputes but the main traits that he learned form it... were speed and accuracy. A special pistol was always hidden in a holster on his left leg, his left hand was his most dominant.
Instincts told him to detain the strange woman, but the wine did him too much that he let it slide for a few minutes so as to learn more about her.
Aurora stared at Remus. Slowly, it seemed as if time worked differently, people walking slower, voices deepening, untill he could notice a falling glass of water being stuck in midair.
"What worries you, Remus named? Is it the fact you cannot fully understand what is happening, or the fact you are defenseless?"
She looks at Jake, frozen in time, unaware anything has even changed.
"Welcome to infinity. My world."
She crouches, inspecting closely the glass of water in midair.
"Perhaps you're right and violence is the final solution to the problem. But I believe this is the only option you think is possible, because it is the only one you have ever been able to see, predict, or even understand. Perhaps you should question yourself."
"What worries you, Remus named? Is it the fact you cannot fully understand what is happening, or the fact you are defenseless?"
For the moment, he thought he had drunk too much wine. His senses were lying to him. 'A glass of water stuck in midair?!?', he thought. And then it kicked in... a flashback during a trip around the Borderworld systems, a nomad entity named Miranda... even since then Remus had been training his mind, but the sheer psychic power emanating from Aurora was so much powerful than the one before.
It took a while before he could forms the right words in his mouth. The effects of the drink were quickly fading... His senses had finally recovered.
"I think the wine had me back there... Not the first time I've met one of your kind... There was one before.... Miranda was her name, any chance you know her?"
Violence was something he dejected. He wasn't quick to resort to violence as the final means to an end. It was something very mysterious to him as to avoid all possible infliction on anybody.
"I believe there are other means to an end. After all, a world without violence would be a world where human beings ceased to be human"
"I do not recall such name. While I may be part of the first entities, I am fairly recent to this universe you are part of. Things were different before the arrival of your kin."
"Violence is a way of solving problems, but it also limits your evolution. Haven't you ever wondered why your kin is so stagnant? Using the same technology for decades? Violence is a natural factor of limitation, one that was removed from us initially, untill you arrived. Where there is a war, there is fear. Where there is fear, there is the need to protect itself. That need forces you to invest your time in aggressive and defensive technologies, not progressive."
She paused.
"The final step of violence is autodestruction. What is being human, if there are no humans left?"

Remus thought about what Aurora said. Staring blankly at the-still frozen glass of water.
"Violence was and will always be a way of solving problems... but that is when the victor cannot be unmatched by way of mouth, it is when pride and ignorance come into consideration. Power in the hands of the wicked will turn into aggression. Aggression turns into war; thus, the chain starts there. All wars are the cause of one man's fear, fear of losing power. They seek to prove their might against their adversaries. The Nomad war however was caused by your kin's. And before this great war, the four Houses lived in peace. They thrived, prospered, and progressed. A long time ago, people believe that we couldn't travel in space... Humanity is progressing, albeit a slow pace. Evolution is only a necessity if the current organism cannot stand against others... The uniqueness in us is that we humans adapt. We adapt to every situation, we invent new technologies for every obstacle; however, it comes at a price. At random intervals, violence manifests itself in us and an eternal struggle is thus created. But in the end, the people want peace. The people will want to progress further. And that what makes us human..."
