My friend Iltavuo installed Freelancer from the original disc, installed Discovery 4.86 right on top and then instantly gets banned from every server he tries to join.
Just to be clear, he did not install patch 1.1, did not edit any files and is using the command-line switch to set his resolution. He has also reinstalled several times, to no avail. Another friend and myself followed the exact same process and we have no trouble joining any server.
Does anybody have any idea what might be the cause of this?
Also check your antivirus quarantined files. Are any FL files blocked? I heard of MP3Codec.dll being blocked recently and causing your type of problem.

This is rather embarassing, but it turns out that my friend, a very smart guy that studies both math and physics, was using the 4.85 + update FLMOD version of the game. I have hit him over the head with a Dromedary and everything works now.
The only thing that remains is that his preferred nickname 'iltavuo' is still banned.
Thank you very much for the quick replies, Iltavuo is facepalming as we speak.
just have him use the same name with some kind of prefix or additional characters. maybe try adding a period or name himself "The_iltavuo". Something of the sort
Hi - i'm having a very similar problem. I followed the installation instructions to the letter, and I disabled both my anti-virus and firewall once i encountered the problem. Funny thing is - i could get onto one server - Discovery Sirius. Every other server tells me that i have "lost my internet connection" on the first try and on the second, that my account is banned and that i should try a different account.
Another thing - How can i be banned before i've even chosen a character? and most importantly - how can the ban get lifted once/if i fix this?
