You must understand that multiplayer games and RP servers are different.
IRC is as in gamer term is used for clan matches. There's no RP chat that I know is affiliated with any game.
There are only RP chats that I know that are affiliated with Anime, and adult orientated ones.
That is a big difference.
RP on IRC as in freelancer method, or any other rp game for that matter (Gmod, SA:MP) will not grow to an successs. Many have tryd and the channels always end up kicking everyone for spamming and such.
Skype on the other hand, despite me not really liking it, it will show logs and stuff from earlier on before you even logged on. IRC does not have this feature.

When i was in the mod team for some games from Gameforge they used IRC for official communication. And that was not that long ago, i think IRC is underrated.
