Its always been like this. For ages. The main thing is that turrets are actually ships without an engine as far as I know. The turrets die of radiation(because they are again, shipmodels). There for activating the shield...
Quick remind. Bases should be a team effort. Not someone powertrading their life away... if you can't maintain it by yourself I think they've reached their goal...
