I like my "Group A, engage #t at position #c" setmessages.
Otherwise the one that coordinates the fight is the idiot who types like mad and bleeds bots every time.
This.
Also, removing the set message function wouldn't stop the "problem" of "/1" engagers, people would just create their own typing macros instead of using the system already in place.
Removal of those shorts wouldn't work anyway if the user has a Logitech G15 or G18 keyboard and has his /1 /2 /3 etc messages bound to one of the G keys...
I don't see much difference between "engaging red" and it's "/l1" counterpart.
If people don't want to role play, they simply won't.
Plus, preset messages are useful in more than one way.
Imagine you are in a fight, you can just drop /g1 which your earlier set to show the sector you are in.
Yeah sure,it will make people type more, but in the end of that, nothing will be changed.
That change was proposed before already. And again, I'm for removing it. Never really used them anyways, apart from greeting messages (/l1 Greetings, #t.).
I don't accept the reasoning that it'd be harder to coordinate fights, since I prefer more RP over (better) PvP.

But like others said... Will it really HELP the RP if we remove it?
Really, people will just use one line ,, Enemy spotted, engaging!" messages other than /1 , /2 , /3 .
On the other hand, it will make pew pew tactics harder, you may not tell your sector, or call the targets as efficient. And in a smuggler - police encounter, the smuggler may run while you try to write.
What I want to say is that removing those will create more problems than innovations. Actually the number of innovations would be... around 0?
I know I am just regathering the previous ideas but still...

Have the setmsg script add a //auto// (or even just a * before the message) prefix to the message sent. Then alter the rules such that those messages are not valid engagement notices.
On a related note, anything that makes there have to be more RP before a fight is good. Along with anything that makes piracy require more skill to be good at. /Setmsg contributes to the phenomenon that any lolwhut and noob can and will pirate. Classy pirates are few and far between, and should receive greater rewards for their skill.
Im penniless, rotten in a fight, and have authority issues, but im back!
People using setmsgs to engage quickly is not the problem itself, but rather a symptom of the true problem: the importance of PvP over RP. I think a helpful maxim could be,
Code:
"How can I and my opponent cooperate in this encounter to make the interaction as rich, interesting, and mutually enjoyable as possible?"
instead of
Code:
"How can I increase my character's chances of winning?"
This is the same reason that, long ago, the bulk of quality RP left the game and came to live on the forums (subsequently leading to boredom and the exodus of those RPers to different communities and genres).
We're trying to create an RP environment in a game that does not have the tools to support it. Freelancer was a pvp game first and foremost, and without the source code to actually modify the game's core design that fact will always remain.
Also doesnt help that when all those 'veteran' players stopped logging in and brought their RP to the forums, they opened server slots that allowed these idiot russians in, causing the server to be flooded by people who cannot communicate and thrive on first-person-style pvp free for alls.
It doesnt matter if you remove those options, these types of players are the majority now, and they'll do whatever they have to in order to skirt around the rules and continue pewpewing.
