I've just rediscovered Freelancer and it's just as good as the computer games of today, but one thing that sets it out is that it still has much lower less space, graphics and CPU requirements due to its age.
One thing I'd like to know about Freelancer is that when the Bretonia approached the Sirius sector, its crew was awakened to check the long-range scanners for possible planets to make landfall, and they chose Planet New London because neither Liberty, Rheinland, Kusari nor the Nomads have settled it. . However, Planet Gaia in the nearby Edinburgh System also was unsettled and settling there would allow access to the planet's bountiful biodiversity, comfortable climate and the Cobalt and Basic Alloy ore deposits mentioned by some NPCs in-game. Gaia is also likely to be able to cheaply supply Oxygen and Water, possibly even Alien Organisms due to its biodiversity and if it is arable, then it could have also been a producer of either Food Rations or Luxury Food or both.
YAAAAY! Happy belated B-day, FL! Been playing this game since I was 10 years old, and it's STILL so awesome.

probably several reasons:
1.) if you've read a bit of lore, Gaia may be biodiverse, but much like Planet Erie and Planet Tangier, they're hard to colonize because the flora and fauna in these planets are dangerous. Erie's a swampworld, while the corsairs who landed on Tangier -mysteriously- disappeared.
2.) take note, in the past New London was quite bountiful in resources in its day. It's surrounded by FOUR asteroid fields that have long since been mined out. Besides, Planet New London -may- have also been clean and full of life in its day, but then... you know... pollution, and such... yea.
