Buy something small with a train CD, but traders for 1 mil at a time and CD them when they don't give it to you.

wat?
Piracy is fun, but hardly a way to earn enough creds for a battleship. And doing this ^ is dirty, won't earn you any friends.
Thats the key actually. This is an MMO for a reason, find some others like you. 2 guys can make a fortune. Each of you get a miner and a transport. Mine for each other, switch, and repeat. Ship together.
I'd get some experience in knowing how the game works, and its economy, before going out and trying to pirate your way into early retirement.
After you get a feel for things, thats when its time to go the more aggressive route. Until then if you have little to no experience at the game yet, you'll find piracy a little harder to succeed at than it was made to seem. Rorry's got the exp. under his belt, so i'm sure it seems like no sweat.

Experience gained from doing what I posted. But there are of course many ways to gain credits, some easier than others, some funner. It's all up to what you like I guess.

As for what LH setup you should get, with a Bomber get EMPs+SNAC (maybe one Energy cannon, or Hellfires). With a VHF, well that's all up to what fits you honestly. Heck even a bomber you have several choices...
I would just like to high five you for being a Lane Hacker (BEST FACTION EVER!!!!!)
And yeah, like was said above, go with what works for you, I find useing a missile helps if you go with a VHF, you can target a traders thruster, fire a few off and bam...trader can't run away (Cannonball ones don't do as much damage over all next to a Sidewinder or Firestalker (don't buy more then 70 ammo for the Firestalkers, it's bugged))
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT I SAID, IT MATTERS WHAT I MEANT!!!!
For VHF set-ups, it really depends on what you are comfortable with.
For guns two main things to note are:
a) Speed of gun.
b) Fire rate of gun.
Most people aim well with 4.00 refire 700ms guns. I on the other hand, am terrible with them but am good with 8.33 750ms guns.
Also note that to take down shields, usually people grab a few debilitators. The usual setup for most ships is therefore 2 debilitators and 4 hull-busting guns.

My favorite part of this game was making money to buy a bigger trading vessel, and then making even more money.
Then I started buying fighters, bombers, and using them to pirate people (for fun, and small profit).
I now have two cruisers, but still, I mostly fly my trusty bomber as It's more fun and challenging, at least the poor little trader has a chance!
And yeah, mining NPCs is probably the quickest way, just buy a cheapo 3K ship you don't mind messing the rep up on, fit Charons, and shoot NPC cargo ships, tractor in, sell, repeat, when you get bored (and your rep is totally screwed anyway), pop a Pirate ID on and pirate people too, make em drop 50% of their cargo, and sell it.
by "real ship" I do mean a VHF or a bomber.
And I think I have enough now, I made like 21 million (after various expenses, like buying a 2000 cargo transport to pick up pirated goods faster). I'm going to start a new char, I think I'll be a lane hacker. Any recommendations on what setup I should get?
Well, now that you have the 2K ship, you should be able to make money a lot faster, it's tough starting out in a starflea, but once you got a nice trade ship, it's easy to make money for nice ships.
Depends what you want the ship for...
If it's a fighter to PvP and kill the navy, or pirate small vessels, then the Ravens Talon is an excellent ship.
If you want a bomber to take down large transports/bomb navy capital ships, the Waran is an excellent ship
Personally I'd buy both on two separate chars.
And take a look at some of the borderworlds ships in the wiki, some of those are nice too.
And yeah, I'm keeping the 2K transport as a separate char, since the reputations are getting messed up on it from randomly blowing up ships, so I'll just keep that just to farm some cash whenever I need it.
Also, does it matter what ship I'm using? Should I be using one from my faction? (eg, a liberty rogue ship) or should I just get the one w/ the best stats? And which cruise disruptor should I get?
It does matter which ship you use, corresponding to your ID. Also mind that mixing techs that don't match will also give you a nerf (for example using, as a Lane Hacker ID'ed ship, LR guns which in the nerchart are 90% and GC ship which in the nerf chart is 90% will give you 10% core over all instead of 0.9*0.9=0.81 (81%) because LR can't use GC ships).
Also, if you haven't done so yet read the rules and don't be shy to ask about those you don't understand, since not knowing doesn't exempt from punishment in case you break the server rules.
Anyway, I'd use either a Sabre or the Outcast VHF, both with Lane Hacker guns and 1 Sidewinder missile pod. (oh and 2 debs ofc)
It matters what ship you are using due to the technerf functions.
For example, it would make little sense for a Liberty Rogue to be owning to Gallic Royal Navy ship. So even if the Cougar is one hell of a beast, it cannot be used effectively by a Liberty Rogue ID'd player. If you use a GRN ship with a LR ID, you get a nerf to 10% of your powercore, meaning your powercore only regenerates at 10% of the normal rate, rendering you incapable of PvP.
If you want to get a ship, get one that has 100% or 90%. If you're good, maybe even 75%. Anything below that will make PvP very difficult.
Look at this Tech Chart for specific information on technerfs.
