This was done for the first few updates, which for some reason really messed up PoB suppliers trying to dock on planets. I don't know if it was just any change to the Mooring Fixtures (which would through out the distance suggestion too), but for now it's not a viable option.
I am not talking about changing the docking hardpoints on them, just move them away from the planet by a couple hundred meters and turn them 90 degrees left or right or something. But physically moving the fixtures themselves should not cause too many issues I imagine, I mean Gallia has mooring fixtures on the side of docking rings and not above... why not have the mooring fixtures floating out in space a bit?
Could always set it at one of the poles, like the if it was on the north pole you'd undock just above the planet, removing the problem with the planet being right behind you when you undock. I think that would be cool, poles tend to get ignored, as do most of the planet aside from the equator area with the docking hp's. At least we'd have a reason to go off plane for something, even if only slightly.

Good idea, I take massive damage every time I undock from a planet.
I almost always EXPLODE when I undock from a planet.
How about placing the undocking spawn point (not sure how stuff is called, I'm no modder) so that the ship appears with its tail on the moor, not the centre?
So I did a little testing and what I thought is possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkqHnL9eUPk This is the normal way of undocking (from Planet Amiens). Notice how even the small Vache gets an atmospheric enty warning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8APH8NDQ-Vk This is a little modified, moved the undocking point(s) away from the mooring fixture a bit. No more atmospheric entry effect and warning for the small transport. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc2AfxEZ4W4 And this one was just to see if you could put it quite a ways away and undock without moving from the undocking spot.
No quick undocking was used, obviously.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, comment. So, it is possible. It shouldn't cause problems, but it's not the nicest solution, since you'd need to move the (un)docking points quite far away for safe Barge undocking. For everything smaller what I have in the last vid should by far be enough. Of course some "popping out into traffic" will happen more often, but ... that's just a minor issue I guess.
