Ambush cloaks are what we need.
100% agreed. I think people need to stop trying to mess with cloaks. In regards to all of these suggestions, Snak3, what do you use your cloak(s) for? What is it that makes you want to suggest this?
First of all, the cloak times are laughable, its barely even worth using at that point. 20 sec on the med cloak is long enough that you'll never be able to engage if it being CD's (unless fleeing a GB/cap in a transport), 60 on the adv now is even crazier. But I don't care about using it to escape, I use it for ambush (inrp not rule breaking ambush that is). I'd like to see it at 10 for med, and 30 for the adv. I used to fly a cap with one, too much can happen in 60 seconds.
If the cloaks adopted this I'd just plain old stop playing. Leave cloaks as they are. If we must go ammo based, I'd make the ammo like 15 max, with 1 usage per cloak, meaning you'd get 15 instances of infinite cloak. 15 too much? 5 is fine.
What these changes do is make cloaks useless and take the fun out of them entirely.
What if you avoided cloaks draining commodities/ammo and made them directly drain credits/sec with the rate different for the ship class?
Now I know hold sizes give a natural limit to how long a ship can cloak and, with a bit of meta-mathematics, you could still put a timer on it before you had to recloak. Similarly you could put the restriction on each ship class on the number of activations/day that the cloak has instead of a timer for a different balance angle. Maybe less daily activations for snubs, more for caps to account for the different power up times with a little "You've exceeded your daily bandwidth! Please contact your Cloaking Data Provider for more information." if you are out of daily cloaks.
From an in game lore/RP perspective you could say that there are massive servers hidden throughout sirius and a few comm satellites could be dotted about each system as relay stations. These servers take in information of how a 3D topographical area "looks" and can photoshop it in different ways to, for example, to erase a ship sized thing and replace it with what the relevant view, sans ship, would have been from every conceivable angle and feed it into a ships cloaking device in real time. The cloak then uses this data to project a holographic bubble replicating the supplied data using the shield generator and presto changeo . . . Invisible ship.
However the person(s) doing all of this server hiding, satellite operating, realtime invisible making-ness aren't doing it for free. This fantastic service is PAYG from the Admins say (to help explain how all of all their amazing adminny powers are funded) and, whilst the device is activated, they help themselves to your Neural Net Account at the cps rate set by your service provider (plus connection fee, tax and other charges may apply. Please refer to the website for full terms and conditions.) Unless you're a nomad/wild who are on a contract paid for by the Daam K'Vosh off camera.
