Not liking them much. Especially considering that I don't see the point in Phantoms being redone anyway, but that's another story..."one more faction" and all.
About these ships I don't like the color scheme. The harsh contrast of the white and black doesn't look too good. Either the white parts need to be made darker or the black parts need a different color then black. I'd go for a dark purple combination. Mainly the white parts are not to my liking for a phantom ship line.
Overall I'm not very impressed by a simple retexturing of (yet another) shipline just so a not-needed faction can get their own ships. Neither Phantoms nor Reapers are around anymore, I don't feel like they need their own ship lines, bases or IDs, considering both groups are dead. It would be better to focus on the main (vanilla) factions of Disco.

Do not ask for the old ships to be kept, as we are replacing them as soon as possible.
thnx for letting good looking ships be replaced with some idiot texture.. Guess if that is the new world of discovery all ships can be removed and perfect balanced with 1 shipline for all the factions. Just put a new texture and there you go.
But i know there is a lack of ship designers here. Guess the initial poster knows that very well with his behaviour against one of the ship designers here.. Respect people and come to sollutions instead of pushing trough all YOU deem need to be done.

So they were an exception to this rule at one point? When was this and why did it change?
What's the point?
1) We needed new models because the old Phantom ships are very poor quality, and imports to boot.
Low quality based on what, and imported from where? I know the cruiser is a star trek thing but if you look at the Ravens Talon now, which used to be from star wars or something (?), that's how a replacement should be done aesthetically.
2) It sets a precedent for the replacement of the old Phantom ships with superior models.
There's nothing superior about this proposed replacement. They lack imagination and don't even try to bring something new to the server. Additionally, why do you need to set precedents towards the community? Typically you do things without such precedents anyway.
Since you too joined in 2006, I would assume you know how ships get into the mod. In most cases, models are not commissioned (at least in this era of the mod); modellers approach the Dev team with their work, either as new submissions or as replacement submissions. This is a case of the latter. If aerelm hadn't created these ships and offered them to us, we'd still be stuck with the old models. Any modeller can do the same as he has, and submit replacement models.
Nothing's bad about being stuck with models that look nice. If you really had a problem with the quality of models, all this grumbling I've heard over the years about some modelers' model quality would've meant that their ships would never be included in the mod, but there they all are. And look, that policy of accepting sub-standard replacements and additions has caused said models to be replaced again and again.
Why are we choosing one or the other? We're not choosing, as we have not been offered a choice. What aerelm has offered us is retextured CTE ships. If someone else wants to retexture BW ships and submit them (or he himself does that), then that's fine too - but that hasn't happened yet.
You are choosing, it's pretty obvious to everybody that you're choosing to replace one with the other. I'd oppose a BW retex replacement as much as a CTE retex replacement, because neither adds anything to the server.
Oh yes, except maybe those Hamburg City feels.
Addendum: If we get a better offer, we'll take it. It's that simple.
Given that this is a proposal and not a notice of inclusion into the mod, I reckon you'll be taking those opinions you're seeking into account before coming to a decision? Or has that decision already been made? If so, the point of this thread doesn't exist, you might as well close it and soldier on with replacing so-called substandard content with stuff that manages to be worse somehow.

This. The RoS treatment for the Civilian line, instead of the Borderworlds line.

Those are pretty damn intimidating, though. The textures are maybe a bit TOO grainy?

A placeholder is exactly what these retextures are intended as, actually. I thought it went without saying, which is why I didn't include it in the original post. Maybe I should add it to the post to avoid any further confusion.
The retexture itself was not even originally made with Phantom shipline in mind. For a while, I spent my free time doing random retextures for Disco ships for my own client-side viewing pleasure, and as it happened, I had that one sittin there and it came up during a completely unrelated discussion I was having with Garrett a while ago. Since he liked the textures, once the subject of the Phantoms replacement faction came up he asked me to submit this to replace the current low quality line, and again, it goes without saying that these ships can and will be replaced once and if anyone puts the time and effort into remaking a line from scratch.
These retextures are only suggested to avoid making a replacement for that line a high priority (since we're nearly rid of imports, and the shipline becoming active again on the official server would've put those models in the spotlight), so modelers can take their time designing a new line after a new faction is established, to fit the specific characteristics of their lore better, since right now any attempt at actually reworking the line would in reality be an attempt based on the Phantoms lore, and not whatever concept that's going to replace them, which is not what we'd like to force modelers into.
I actually went around digging for those models in the dev forums a while back, but far as I could see, those ships were never actually submitted through the proper channels (i.e. dev team didn't receive the actual model files), so unless you can find the original modeler (I think it was Raiku or someone), I'm afraid the only thing we can implement using a couple of .PNG renders is ship icons, not actual flyable ships.
