Its prefectly fine for traders to run and dock. They are inrp meant to be traders and not warriors. Not everyday we see a trader take up arms against a pirate, and actually win. Though the odds are that most of the time the trader can kill the pirate if he is anthing less than a bomber, the trader shouldnt. Traders, normally when facing danger, try to avoid it by either paying up the pirate, or running away and docking. Fighting the pirate is OORP in most cases, the ability that you can PvP better than the one in the pirate character is not a reason to support this. So this makes every incident perfect for both the parties. Either pay up, or run, if the demand is like a troll.
But for fighters, once you have got into a fight, its either a blue message with your name on the left or right side. If a fighter tries to dock while in the middle of a fight, he shouldnt have participated in the fight at the first place or should have ot fired a shot or two. But unfortunately, thats the problem I see nowadays. Fighters clinging on to bases and roaming around, so that the opposing party gets fed up and leaves. Or just docks there and logs off. Either way, it is fun for you at the cost of others fun.
In my case, I suck at PvP, my bombers have been mauled over by 5kers, and I dont usually win hands down. But I have never docked my fighter when engaged in a fight, whatsoever. Whether its a bomber vs two fighters(recently near cali, I was killed by a VHF and a HF while on my bomber, though I never docked in cali and eventually blew up) or any other case, I have never thought of hugging a base or insta docking. And I do whine and shout at people who do that. To be true, I grow a OORP hate towards those kind of people, thats my case... I dont know what others may feel like.
Well,if the fight is fair and is,for example 1 on 1, I think running away from the opponent is much more shame then letting others see his blue message.
Now another case, for example, you opened fire on the opponent who called for reinforcements and it appeared to be uncontrollable for you... You look around and see your Base quite close (let's say 5 km away)... I don't see there anything wrong if you run away from enemies and save yourself.
And there's also another case, which is called RP. For a nice RP you try your best to avoid blue message which starts with your character name. Some even prefer wasting, for example,20-30 minutes for traveling back when he\she can simply suicide him\herself and respawn where he wanted to go...
Also, let's switch the tables. Why would anyone want blue messages more than docking messages if the outcome is the same. ( Not counting Bounty Claims and promotion requirements )
I am talking about docking mid-fight and dying, not escaping your enemy.
The former two serve the same besides for bounty hunting, the latter lets you stay alive in the system. They are completely different.
While I don't approve the latter, I for the very least understand the reasoning for it.
@Snak3 - I for one don't mind. For me in both cases I won, and in the case of docking I even humiliated my enemy. It's just a trend that I've seen lately and wondered about.
EDIT: Also, unless your base is nearby, you would usually be wasting more of your own time by running away and docking in his face.
INRP, character avoided doubtful luxury of drifting away in a escape pod (or possibly dying), gaining partial victory in a sense to see and fight another day. Even military makes a retreat. Not to mention he saved resources and money otherwise wasted on completely new ship.
OORP, I am not sure what could be actual "out of roleplay" behind one of the most basic human instincts.

That's a reason I can understand. Not agree with but understand. Though I tend to post docking-messages if I have a place to too.
