Obviously such attitudes won't help. A help to newcomers is a must, as they have no idea on how to begin and as Blake told they're ignored by the more veteran playerbase, this is not a way to recover players at all. A pair of weks ago i came back from almost 2 years of inactivity. I lost my old accounts and i had to begin from 0 again but i recovered fas, why? Because i knew how to. But newbies don't, and i can guess how the y feel after crossing a pair of jerks. They need a help to begin.... perhaps a freighter or a smal cargo ship like the mentioned gull and even a small item where they can see a pair of short routes to begin earning some credits....
At the rate of people leaving and official factions disbanding, I can say that its safe to assume maybe half a year or one complete year, until people just move on.
If there is some miracle of some kind that has been eluding us for so long, in this short span of time, maybe then, we can think of a revival, with a server population close to 150/200, or something close to 140 at peaks, when I started off.
Until, then, enjoy this one year of ever decreasing content and faction demises. This might seem harsh, but with the current scenario, this is the reasonable conclusion, and the bitter truth that we have to swallow.

I was dishearted but when I read about swallow, I just can't explain how happy was I , I think he should be a part of dev team
You can ignore reality but you can not ignore consequences of ignoring reality

A large update that's more than just a bunch of balance tweaks/a ship pack/whatever to possibly get some players back that went inactive recently, and perhaps attract some new players as well.
Which I don't really expect to see happening anytime soon. The devs themselves have, after all, stated that they have neither the manpower nor the free time to do a lot of work on the mod.
To address #deletegallia posts:
Shrinking space could help, sure. But what we really need is activity hubs. Places where trading, mining, and above all interacting with other players is more beneficial/profitable/fun than anywhere else. It doesn't matter if we have 10,000 systems if players are usually concentrated in only 3 systems.
