ok, thanks for clearing that up... even though there seems to be a nice little discussion, but I think it's agreed that ID is most important.
To another point, since not all players go on the forums, maybe there should be a console message or something saying "Scan for ID before engaging" or something. Many knuckle-heads see a "red" person on their scanners and attack them, so that's a little problem there...

is there any way to confirm the tag, which one is flying arround with? i now have a bounty hunter ship and id, but i still cant tell which tag i have. i dont want to get on everyones nerves, i meet: //excuse me, what tag do i have?

all i know is that i had a police tag, long ago, when i was just a trader, and got near cali base.

and how do i change the tag and not only by coincidence?

ID tag and ship/loadout are all very important, if one fails, the other will fail too. Its frikin' trinity:)

Yes, go to your reputation sheet (f8), scroll to the bottom. The very bottom one, with the rep flashing is what shows as your Tag.
