5 class 5 turrets? Even transports have more firepower nowadays. While cruiser primaries are worse than gunboat turrets now, I don't think that converting all current turrets to gunboat ones and giving this ship heavy GB powercore will make it OP. Oh, and give it cruiser speed.
Also, special equipment mounts mean docking modules?

That's the point... It's supposed to be a research vessel, not made for any kind of combat. It doesn't have to be good in combat to be good in discovery. It's an RP server, afterall.
Gunboats have always been a very interesting shiptype for Roleplay aswell, since they not only consist of a cockpit, but still are allowed on most IDs. They have also been used as Research vessels, sometimes even without weapons. This would continue that line of thought, a good line.

ilike the idea overall but 5 turrets? it has been stated that is a research vessel and all that jazz and its not a combat, or at least not for a mainline, but those 5 turrets? one thing is to make the ship not meant to combat. another one is to render it defenceless
Why make it a subpar to your average gunboat when Kusari explorer (a proper heavy gunboat) is currently being used for the same role without causing any problems? Plus, considering the size/hull ratio, this thing will be a shieldboat anyways, so giving it appropriate number of turrets wouldn't make it that overpowered.

As a side note, It's good to have people like you around, who actually put a second or two in coming up with proper arguments and functional alternatives when they encounter a proposed change not to their liking, rather than just going on a pointless spree of webkiddierage with their cries of FinalNail™. You're a valuable member of the community and the effort you put into contributing to the development of this mod is appreciated, so keep up the good work.
Errr... sarcasm aside, that's another good point. We already have the Wrecker, Montante, and Condor, as well. The only thing this ship would have over the Montante/KuGB would be a (~2x) larger cargo hold, at the cost of size and maneuverability. With the proposed stats, you're basically turning it into a much bigger and slower Wrecker for the masses.
And you get the 'aesthetic' of it being a 'freelance research ship', whoopee. You could do this with the current Corvo/Zoner ID. You could also simply take the current Corvo and add 'May be used with the Freelancer ID' onto its infocard, and no rebalance would really be necessary (it's already a fairly weak ship).
As for equipment slots: 1100 cargo space isn't much when the survey modules take 800/600/400. It would still need a transport to carry fuel, like any other cruiser. So, no advantage there, might as well use a regular cruiser. If it had enough space to carry a survey module and enough fuel to run it, I could maybe see making the ship so weak in combat.
I'm not trying to be rude here, but I think if you're going to make a ship that's something of a cross between cruiser and gunboat, you need to set your sights a little bit closer to the center between those two extremes, rather than it just being a large, slow gunboat with a cruiser shield and more cargo.
Is giving it a cruiser turret slot too much? That would let it mount a cruiser missile turret, or something. Or, you could give it a battleship light slot, so it could mount a flak turret.

Ok, cool idea, i like the stats and all, just have one question.
What will these explorer type players do in game? Specifically. They get this cool ship and they do what? What is there to explore that a typical gunboat or small transport or even freighter can't explore? I'm asking cause i explored 90% of the disco systems on an x-shuttle, even Gallia. When you show me this ship i'm thinking how it can be used in combat. I don't know how i would use it otherwise, it will be boring just flying through space exploring, especially if you have a cruiser shield protecting you. Maybe you are preparing some dangerous systems with radiation, black holes, mine fields, gas pockets that would make such a ship necessary but right now i don't know how to use it.

mmm... take it this way....
for example, give it the RP of medical research vessel for example... you can't use a freighter for that, due to size, you can use a transport for that but most cases a ship like that would end being used as...well... transport, you can RP about the medical equipment and all of this, but still meh, gunboat has the space dedicated to their weaponry... while a dedicated research vessel like aerelm proposed can be easily Rped that way, as surely should had such instalations inside and all of that.... and corvo looks cool^^

The offensive capabilities do not really compensate for the cargo and defensive ones. In other words, the ship you proposed at first will be stuck with the same idea as the Yachts. Glorified and pretty ships without much use due to their bad cargo space, with the only gimmic to them being the forward gun, in this case- the shield.
Might I suggest an alternative to this?
