I felt somewhat bored by the music you hear while you're in Gallia systems, nothing against it, just found it somewhat repetitive, so, just for fun, I've changed the music for some systems, namely:
Auverne
Picardy
Maine
Orleannais
and Provence
...all have new music now, different for most systems.
All the music gets repetitive after some time, especially if you are playing since 10+ years. Liberty and Kusari music was the most boring for me.
I just disable all in-game music and queue a playlist. Never tried to replace the music in the game files, though. Is it easy to do?
Well the original music is more like soundscapes which doesn't get boring so quickly, but as the musical pieces are also very short, it sure did get repetitive. However, as Gallia music was melodic (nothing against that classical thang, mind you, I though it fit well to Gallia), it has worn out more rapidly.
The music I used is longer files (4-7 minutes) so it doesn't repeat much while you're flying and doesn't get repetitive.
I used the following:
Picardy and Maine - Famulari "Snow" (piano music, ambient)
Orleannais - Ken Martin "Land of Calm" (electronic, space music)
Auverne - Andromeda "Travelling (alone)" (spacesynth)
Provence - Luciano Alves "Piano Blues" (jazz fusion)
These worked perfectly for me...
As to how it is done, it is quite easy. To simply replace a file you need to see how it is named in the respective Freelancer "music" folder and name your new file respectively. Then just replace the file.
You can also add totally new, extra music files, with any names you see fit. But you need to edit the ini file for the system you wish to use the new music for (DATA/UNIVERSE/SYSTEMS). After that in DATA/AUDIO edit the music.ini file. You can add as many new music files as you want.
[Sound]
nickname = music_ga_space
type = music
file = audio\music\discovery\music_ga_space.wav
attenuation = -6
streamer = true
[Sound]
nickname = music_ga_space_2
type = music
file = audio\music\discovery\music_ga_space_2.wav
attenuation = -6
streamer = true
[Sound]
nickname = music_ga_space_3
type = music
file = audio\music\discovery\music_ga_space_3.wav
attenuation = -6
streamer = true
This is how it looks in Discovery. Copy any of these three blocks below and replace the wav. file with the name of your own wav. file. Change the nickname as well. Then save the changes in music.ini file before exiting.

That's it. The music will now appear in the game.
Replacing the music seems surprisingly easy. Should try it sometime. Thanks!
I'm not sure if editing the system INIs is a good idea as it might trigger the anti-cheat. (People used to modify those files to mine credit cards, etc)
Ok, I must confess that I can't say anything in this regard but... you will only have to edit stuff related to music in the star system's ini file and of the general ini files you only have to edit the music.ini file. I doubt that this file has that much of an influence on the rest of the parameters in the game.
But of course... try it at your own risk and all...
I used to edit the star system music but even that got repetitive after awhile.
Now I usually have my chosen playlist playing.
Sometimes I log into Live ATC net for authentic comms chat.
Shannon International is my fav as I love the Irish ATC chat:
Gallia music not only repetitive and boring, it totally inconsistent with original game music. I have to change it as i begin exploring gallic space. With exception of The-Dark-Journey.wav which is good one.
