Wow Onca, I still have my old Apple //c. The only games I had for it were a weird text-based adventure game though, my parent were thoroughly amused by my craving for inferior technology.
Anywho, I can't say which games are best because I play many different types of games all the time, though some like Freelancer or EQ seem to hold my interest for an unknown reason.
I LOVED Starcraft when it came out, and I'll still play it sometimes, just the memories of playing that thing till 5 or 6 in the morning is just too much. Can't wait to finally play Brawl, if my friend's Wii ever gets fixed.:(
I still love an old favorite called Gunstar Heroes. A Contra-like/ripoff that I played non-stop in the old days. RPGs, especially KOTOR, are also my favorite.
"The thirteen saloons that had lined the one street of Seney had not left a trace. The foundations of the Mansion House hotel stuck up above the ground. The stone was chipped and split by the fire. It was all that was left of the town of Seney. Even the surface had been burned off the ground.
Nick looked at the burned-over stretch of hillside, where he had expected to find the scattered houses of the town and then walked down the railroad track to the bridge over the river. The river was there."
Mechwarrior 2
Wing Commander 1 and 2
Wolf3d
Doom 1 and 2
Privateer
WC Armada
Duke3d
Commander Keen Series
X-wing\Tie Series
Total Annihilation
Descent
.... Freelancer
I know this shows how old I am, but I really have a thing for the old games with great game play. I think it also goes with being a kid and my dad bringing me home a 386DX 25 mobo and me going nuts. Anyone here play with DOS Box? I love it. Just finished the Wing Commander 1 series and was reveling in how good it was yet again.
Descent and Decent 2 pure one man ship flying, lost in the mines, robot blasting fun. Plus multiplayer. What more can you ask?
Halo and Halo 2 My favorite FPS for single player and multi player. My only complaint is co-op mode is limited to 2 players. What I would have given to play as part of a 4 Spartan team through the storyline on Legendary.
Morrowind and Oblivion
Knights of the Old Republic (2 could have been better, but it was still good)
And of course Freelancer multiplayer
There must be a bunch from the good old days of Atari 2600 and then Commodore 64 like Dig Dug, Tempest, Joust, and Pac Man but its been so long I cant remember them all specifically. Believe it or not I did have the original PONG console back in 1975 or maybe 1976 and in its time it was great.
i Loved Oblivion, Halo 3, the Metal Gear Solid Series, the GTA series and also Call of Duty 4

Hmm. Tough call. I've played 1000's of games new and old. Its hard to call one best but.. I'm gunna have to go with:
X-Com: UFO Enemy Unknown
A friend of mine at high school in the time gave me a copy of this and it resulted in grades dropping, lack of social life, etc. It was the first video game where I found out the easy way that gaming can and will become an addiction.
It really was'nt for some kinda tight knit story that was scripted other than heres the aliens, they are expanding and you gotta stop them. The strategy elements though were some of the best approached still even today because you really had to wiegh out so many options in both fields of the game.
For example:
Asia is being attacked and my relations are already poor but I desperatly need the funding. My squad isnt that equipped and I'm in the dead middle of researching my next weapon set which I will have to manufacture, but.. I have no choice. I send my troops with poor weaponry against Discs of doom and crysallids only to have them mind controlled, paniced and running around killing each other. My relations with Asia drop anyway due to incompetance.
I'm in the field with my elite squad and I noticed an alien run in a building. I have found a few hostages and secured them, but there is still threats... but have I rescued all the hostages REALLY? I have the option of destroying the whole building or taking a couple troops in there and possibly have them killed due to ambush. Hmm.... I'll take my chances. I set the timer, throw it in a window and wait. The building turns to ashes. I see an alien corpse and hear the death screams of 2 civilians. Mission over, rating lost.
With an exception of something like Civ4, theres not many games that make me think that hard anymore. Scripted stories and stuff only go so far with me. Even todays Final Fantasy games feel way too much 'on rails' with me. Let me decide what goes on and this game was one of the few that actually allowed me to do that but still had a uniform progression and kept the two together quite well.
Most probably the first one, even if I have never played it online.
