Okay so this is an issue thats really bothering me lately.
Ive recently taken over Planetform.
Planetform has literally had 0 presence on the server the entire time ive been here. however despite that it has several terraforming projects going on across the galaxy (inrp).
the terraforming of California Minor is nearing completion in terms of rp time line. but it still looks like the snow ball it always did.
How do I justify asking the devs to change the skin on the planet to reflect what it should look like by now when planetform has been literally not existed on the server in more than the occasional quite sneeze in the background of the server for more or less ever.
I've removed everyone from the faction who had been pretty much a cardboard cut out, and not a part of the faction, leaving literally 4 people left out of about 16, ninja'd one person in and two recruits, a team of 8 players.
I can play frequently after 5pm GMT, one says they cant play after 5 GMT (so i dont see them, and chances they log are very slim), 2 can only play literally 1 time per week due to life commitments, 1 I haven't seen since becoming leader, another ive seen once since becoming leader, one new recruit hasnt logged since joining, and the last guy is away from home frequently so they cant play either.
So im left wondering is it even worth playing Planetform? I mean, i would no-life the faction if I could get people to log in frequently. I want to change the Galaxy! create new worlds to live on and invent new technology to see that happen.
but the faction is completely frozen, how the heck am I supposed to unfreeze this?
How do you break inactivity?
Are some factions just destined to be dead forever?
I started up a profitable trade run for you guys with Gaian Wildlife and Apfelstrudel. That should give you a guys a good kickstart. If you have suggestions, throw them our way in Players Request.

I know, it is appreciated. but since you can just do the same run with any ship its not really helped us as much as it could have.
I just see thousands of freelancer serenitys, pirate trains and BWT's instead of planetform ships.

Why not start up an RP Project surrounding the terraforming of California Minor? You could have your Planetform ships drop off certain resources to further the terraforming procedure and have some Forum RP to justify it (such as finalization of contracts, on-ground terraforming RP).
You could also organize a few convoys and encourage the Gaians to pop up to test your PvP capabilities. This not only gets you active, but the Gaians as well.
I am playing this mod since 2008, and I've been in many factions since then. One was amazing, many were all-right, many I was part of only for few weeks before them falling apart of me quitting. For all this time I've been thinking a lot about what makes faction active.
Today I think that for faction to be really active, you need to find something grindable that you really enjoy doing. The more such activities faction has, the better, but it must be something you don't need prior arrangements to get started. Then you need to find one or two more guys who enjoy doing those thing and enjoy doing them together with you and each other. Even if in group chat you are all OORP discussing something completly irrevelant to game, but interesting for you guys, the time will be fun and flow fast. And if there is positive chem between you guys, there won't be problem in doing this again and again. Hours on tracker (and in game presence) will happen on its own.
As pack grows and more of you are in game at single time, new opportunities will start opening up. People will target you with their RP/PvP, you will be able to step to bigger groups. If faction's core remains friendly and inviting to newcomers, it will keep rolling.
As de-facto trading faction you have certain advantage of pvp'ing factions, as as long as your trade routes are there, your basic raison d'etre is here for you.
Personally, I would keep "planetforming" thing purely for forum RP's and wouldn't obsess too much about all trade done by faction being directly associated with this.
Just my 3 EUR
Ah yes! There was idea in RHA to try do something with planet in O-47 that would prolly involve Planetform, but my pathological tendency to forget things interrupted with us approaching you guys with that. Sorry for that.
Try to lobby perhaps for government giving you exclusivity on certain commodities? For example terraforming gases, under the claim that if used unchecked they could have devastating effect on certain planets and ecological floras. Thus should only be handled by a professional corporation in the field - Planetform.

For the longest time when i was trying to start my own faction I had no one log because real life issues and it was like 4 members at the time.
What did I do?
Pretend that I was leading an Active faction.
So like I did not stop the comms RP.
I logged when I could.
I made it look like it was all good.
When I noticed people were around I posted on skype: LOGLGOGLGOGLGOGLGOGGLOGLG Im Logged in Lets fly!
Why? Because people wana fly with each other when they first start into a faction. That is the whole reason they join one to begin with.
When you pass the point where players find their place and make good friendships with one another then they may log with you not logging in! And then you know you have done your job right in introducing the faction to them.
Take for example Jack Henderson. What do you see him doing all the time? Posting and saying: WE NEED THIS AND THIS. LOG HERE AND HERE.
The point is to generate activity with one another and get the players excited to play.
Oh and faction events / mini-events help too.
Now if that doesn't help you then ok. You can argue that I am always wrong.
But the devs say that the player faction activity count is not wrong so....
Are Xenobiotic filters still needed for Base Building?
If they are, Build a Base near Cold Depo.
Ask the Devs that Xenofilters be a faction specific commodity, like Gate Lane Parts use to be or still are. Give Planetform the right to shoot down any ship with Xenofilters that is not licensed.
Make a deal with the Xenos to keep away from Planetform ships in exchange for jobs on Cold Depo and a long term promise to terraform a planet for them.(Yea right...)
Or....considering the state of affairs in Brettonia...RP that Planetform wants to move its headquarters to someplace nuetral like Oita, and in this be able to do business with everyone and anyone. A move to make PLanetform more independent of any specific house might be interesting.
