So, I have noticed this problem now for about two weeks maybe.
It seems like other players teleport/skip by me occasionally. What do I mean by that you might ask.
As an example I might name one of the recent ones. I was cruising towards the Hiroshima jump hole in Tohoku and another player flew directly at me from that direction and all the sudden he "teleported" from 9K infront of me to 9K behind me.
Another example would be that I saw a player fighting npcs 10K away from the Freeport in Tau 37 and suddenly he disappeared and I got the message of him docking at the Freeport about 20 seconds later without him being on my scanners. I'm pretty sure he didn't cloak, since he had shield when he disappeared and there was no animation either.
So, it's kinda weird. I always check my ping after this stuff happens and it seems fine, like 36ms and no loss. Then I thought I might have a virus or malware or anything which might cause lagspikes or something like that. Checked, removed indeed a malware program, but that didn't change anything, since it happened to me again like 15 minutes ago.
Anyone familiar with this and/or knows a solution/cause? Thanks.
IMHO that mean that You or mentioned player lag-like-hell.
I suggest to check Your ping and ping of the target next time if You see such thing ever again.
That's because when you alt tab you "lag" in-game. So when you are in cruise and after some seconds you alt tab into the game again you suddenly teleport many K more forward. It can be categorized as a glicht.

Ping: 36ms (Max: 1000ms) Fluct: 1ms Loss: 0% (Max: 70%) Lag: 0% (Max: 100%) - That's my data, when it happened the last time, looks fine to me.

Hm, might be that then, I suppose?
Thanks for the input. If I see that next time, I'll try to remember pinging the other player.
There is another explanation for what you have been experiencing. Freelancer is an old game. It is a brilliant game, but much of its potential has been wasted, and on top of that, its age is starting to show.
If, for example, you are cruising from X to Y, and somebody is cruising from Y to X, then they will show up on your screen, appear to be sitting still and then suddenly warp several K. This, to my knowledge, is an unfixiable problem based on FL's outdated and flawed netcode.
In short, detecting somebody on the very edge of your range won't give you an accurate picture of where they are for several seconds. It may take some time to update for you, and that is a problem with the game, not the server or your connection to it.

and that all comes down to your net speed/cpu speed etc

Mhm. Yeah it's just weird that I never noticed this before or never had this before, even though I didn't change anything.
Well my laptop/cpu is quite outdated admittedly, but this problem just appeared like two weeks ago and I play disco on the same machine as I did on the first day. Regarding the netspeed it's like 50-80 mbps down and 5-7 mbps up, which should be more than enough.
Thanks again, guys. I'll monitor it and see if I can ping the next person who happens to do that "teleporting". I assume it might be really just the alt-tabbing and for some reason I just got "lucky" and had this happen so often in a row that it felt like an anomaly.
What he is seeing is when someone jumps into the system from a gate/jumphole, nothing to do with lag and seen it many times when i still played. Just a bug from a ship entering the system. they appear close then zip away quickly. some times i guess, did not read all of it, just here looking for someone.
