Slightly off topic (for which I apologise), but those of you who have played a fair bit of Beyond Earth... would you say it is a worthy sucessor to Alpha Cantauri (assuming you played and loved that)?

Not even close. While the basic premise is similar, Beyond Earth has nowhere near the amount of intellectual depth and customization that Alpha Centauri did. AC is still the best turn based strategy game Firaxis have made.
