As Mao mentioned, the expensive POB itself can be easily circumvented via cloaks. Uncloak near the base, activate its shield and the miners will be unable to dock for a sufficient amount of time. The only issue in mining fields are weapon platforms by POBs because unless you're in a group, you can't keep an eye on the traders slipping away and keeping the turrets on each platform shot off (especially after the trader shoots the platforms to explode it and make a new one with a new set of turrets spawn).
Pirating outside of mining fields is also a viable alternative if you're solo or even better: In a group.

@Nyx The case here is probably that the base used to be in a mining field before the rule change, and the move was done to keep it this way. //edit nvm
@Lythrilux , I don't own a base, none of my factions have a POB and I still defend it (though tbh weapon platforms for POBs at critical locations (mining fields, jumpgates for example) should go). I usually pirate at the O3/O7 connection (preferably in a group) and it isn't really that troublesome and neither do you miss a lot of traders. Pirating inside of the fields is not the only option by far. So?

I mostly play as unlawful. I have no problem with PoBs in mining fields. Game mechanics allow me to stop traders and miners from using them. It's more work from my part? Yes. Is that bad for gameplay? No. PoBs in mining field affect like a tiny fraction of the activity server-wise. Also, despite the fact that I'm part of a faction that owns one such PoB, I'm poor.
The problems I have with PoBs is that they appear, most of the time, with absolutely no respect for role play and lore. Like the two BMF bases in Manchester that are 10k away from a Gaian base. There's no way those engineers would have been able to build a station there. The gaians would have killed them instantly. But because gaians have no firepower to take care of those two, now we have to live with them. BMM and Gaians, sitting in a field K I S S I N G... What I want to say with this is I couldn't care less they're in the mining field but I'd like them moved for RP reasons (they can also move the field).

The Mining Field was Nuked in a previous update. It is just a matter of time before BMF ask for them to be moved anyway.
I do believe, from previous arguments, that this Gaian Base is 'super secret' and therefore the BMM Miners would never have known it was there and maybe the Gaians didn't want to reveal it..
'I would like to be half as clever as some people like to believe they are' Life is full of disappointments, it is how we handle them that helps to define us, as a person
It took years for the last ones to understand that blocking and area denial PoBs were bad for gameplay. I think by now most players have understood, and most of the POBs are gone - but that insight came at a huge cost.
I cannot understand how anybody can still defend or even facilitate more POB-related damage to be done by means of mining field POBs.
It is sooo easy to fix, but the inability to do the right thing when it comes to working rules about POB placement is striking and - honestly - very frustrating. The right way to go is: no POB can be closer than 20 k from minable zones. No "up to core 2" and no "old bases can stay", this is trash and it is killing gameplay in the region.

Please. Do you even know how silly that sounds?

This. Mining field PoBs are terrible and should be (re)moved. No matter what dumb or irrelevant reasons you come up with to make it "okay", it's not. It, as Lyth said it, reduces or prohibits any activity and interaction in that area.
