The problem is that the most unfun and annoying type of piracy - cargo piracy - is simultaneously the easiest and the most profitable. This is the reason that pirating on anything other than a Junker is just simply not profitable and not worth the time. You can park a Junker in Kepler or Sigma-13, blue people and sell off stuff just one system away for a really good profit. Meanwhile a bomber player who'd just demand 3 millions from a lone trader would laugh and keep thrusting to the nearest base because very rarely will a bomber have enough power to take it down before it reaches the station or backup arrives.
Protege, I didn't say I cargo pirated. I fly a Small Transport because they put out better DPS than a single bomber, can dodge Charons just as well, can 1v1 Lawful bombers and garbage Gunboats, and thrust faster than Large Transports.
The ability to hold the cargo dropped by bads who I inevitably effortlessly slay is just a bonus.

The solo trader is making money. The solo pirate that is incapable of killing solo traders is not.
Piracy - trader interaction is trader biased by definition as the trader is the "party" that is continuously making money, while the pirate depends on traders' activity to make any money at all, and they'll almost always make a dozen times less money/hour than a trader does.
If you want escorting to not be a complete waste of time, you need two things: traders need to be unsafe without escorts (meaning piracy needs to be relatively easy), and escorts need to actually be able to protect their trader from enemies.
True, however I'm fairly sure most pirates have their own traders/miners to make money at least in some form in order to buy a ship to use as a pirate.
In an ideal world an escort would be needed though most escorts these days are more akin to scouts since the time it takes a fighter to kill a bomber is usually higher than it is for a bomber to kill a transport. Then we enter the murky underworld that is teamwork and as we know from the old mining changes, forced teamwork tends to make folks quite unhappy, even more so considering the server population as of late.
So Traders have to hire escorts to protect against pirates...So we have to give money to a guy in a fighter to protect us from giving guys in fighters money...Wait...

Go shill for powertrading clubs somewhere else.
Whats wrong with just forcing the pirates to work together in a team? There's nothing stopping them from just spending 2 million to get another pirate to help them
