It's by far not a bad pirate encounter.
A 1 million demand is very low, and you should just pay (if you haven't just restarted the game and you are making money in penny).
If you move, you will always be killed.
So your best bet is: roleplay, roleplay... and then either do what they say, or shoot/run (and likely die).
In Disco, expect more demands of up to 10 million, or "drop cargo" - so you should be happy with low demands. And they even typed full sentences. So... ye. Not a bad encounter at all.

Also, I don´t know what ID those two were flying, but I suppose it was Liberty Rogues? Those are scoundrels so what they did perfectly fits their RP role. They came for your money. It is same situation like when you walk through some darker part of the town and suddenly two scoundrels appear in front of you with pistols and ask for you wallet. Would you tell them "Good Evening May I ask What your business here is this Evening?" and then start to walk away? Yea, it would very likely end bad.
Seems some players still forget that proper RP does not have be only in form of twenty minutes of discussion. And that especially applies to pirates. Generally, this behaviour is actually against their RP role. Unless it´s pirate which wants lawfuls to appear because he wants shooting or is so cocky that he does not care, they want to get money as fast as possible and disappear before lawfuls arrive. Simple as that.

You were given proper inRP conversation and if you weren't interested in PVP you could have give them what they asked for. If you didn't have any credits, you could've just go and ask OOC like: //Hey, I don't have any credits, could you let me go?;
Though if you had credits, this is bad way to attempt to get out of piracy. It's same if you avoid encounter after you realized you will be blown up except, if it is really real life matter that forced you to leave the encounter.
Second, their business was already clear as they made a demand for you.
Third, if you wonder if that is okay, they gave you like 30 seconds to comply and asked for one million. I for example ask from 3 to 10 millions depending on the cargo and sometimes, if my RP obliges me, I demand all of cargo to be jettisoned and destroyed. If I face trader that is very poor, like in freighter, I ignore it.
If you want to avoid piracy, I suggest making some good routes.

This..., all of this. I couldn't explain it better myself.
In my opinion this is the worst case of "rp" you can encounter cause basically there is no rp. It sums up to hey I am a pirate you have 30s to give money then boom. I can't even see the engaging sentence. I hope mentalities will change one day. Of course it is more complicated to build a story attached to your character. I am sorry that happened to you, this is the dark face of Discovery. And I will not talk about the "10 seconds" new thing...

It is a mistake many newer players make when they think that there has to be an engagement message. If there was enough roleplay (that of course has to fit the situation), there is no need to say "I will shoot you now". A conversation between a pirate and a trader does not have to have "powering up weapons" in it.

No. Not really. I got a "Ohooo new victim on sight.... time for a target practise !!! Engagabung... booom... trass.... the enemy ship !!!" two liner yesterday with no time to react at all. Without a demand. 3 seconds between the lines. Last week a "stop" "4 mill or die". The example provided in the OP is by far better than my examples if you ask me.
And when a trader moves or don't want to stop even for a VERY low demand like 1 million credits he deserves nothing else than to get shot. I even had traders running becuase i was asking for 500.000 credits. It's not always the pirates fault. Especially not in this case.

For me it's all the same. Everyone can easily understand that saying nothing or just : give me money I need to feed my children is clearly not the good way to make the experience interesting. ps: saying it's to feed your dog doesn't work either

I want your money or your cargo. I don't need a reason beyond "if you do not give in to my demands TOO LATE."
I'm so sick of all these garbage "roleplayers" saying that my piracy isn't fair or good enough for them. The only time I'll stand and RP with my mark is when I can see they speak proper English.

To put it bluntly.
This all stems from the false assumption that roleplaying equals just talking. Whereas it's actually about playing a role. The hint is in the name.
Why would a pirate stop and talk with his mark beyond conveying his demands, which usually come down to your money or your life? This is what the average pirate is after, it's not rocket science. Stopping to have a drawn out conversation with the trader he intends to rob while a police patrol might be a lane away isn't really what I would call - "good RP".

The term roleplaying is very subjective, it's up to you what you are going to do with it. As I said the goal in fine is to make the experience interesting, at least it should be ^^ When you say : I am a pirate and as such I don't need to be smart, well you are just looking for an excuse.
