Ok then, since there are no other answers incoming, here is the answer from the book.
3 horses.
The people who went riding are: Grandmother, Mother, Daughter.
Grandmother, being the Mother of the Mother and also someones Daughter
Mother, being the Daughters Mother and the Grandmothers Daughter.
Daughter, being, well the Daughter.
The book in question is "Desert God" by Wilbur Smith, not a bad read and part of a series based in Egypt back when Pyramids and Pharoes were still a thing.
