No, Crete is not important.

How dare you remove a cinematic that has no bearing on storyline, balance, or overall attention to the various aspects of the mod. Shame. Where is my Farmer's Alliance menu screen for when I stare at the main menu and not play the game like so many of these people do? I am appalled.

I thought exactly this before I joined the staff team but behind the scenes it's the complete opposite. They do care and are trying to push the story line along so they can focus on something else. There is just a lot to do at the moment (which is being worked on heavily). We have over 80 requests to sort out and over the past 2 weeks we're down to like 30. Things are moving along and so is the story.
All I'll say is that all I've seen thus far is a significant shift in resources and attention to one aspect of the mod. Truthfully, the [b]overall[b] story isn't moving forward - one runner is being frantically taxied to the finish line whilst everyone else is being left in the dust. When the community asked for the Gallic story line to end (personally I wasn't one of those people) they didn't envision it like this.
I don't doubt that the recent Staff appointments have ushered in an uptake of processed requests, yet at the same time even when more Staff were present the complaints of a relentless lone focus on Gallia in this thread would still ring true. Even when factions have tried to get themselves involved with and benefit from that focus, if they get in the way of that rush to the finish line their contributions to that plot are limited to a miniscule impact (see the Omega-3 stuff).
On a more personal note, at least certainly in the Omicrons and Omegas even before the coup there was virtually zero interest or care from the Development Team for some regions in the mod. With that in mind, promise of the coup changing things for the better has not been met.
Some people are calling Chron's reaction silly, but you can't help but feel the implied message that comes with the intro removal. FYI Chron suggested and helped me plan an event that was submitted half a year ago (maybe even longer), and very little has been heard regarding it's progress. Meanwhile Gallic events have been coming out the wazoo.
