I have to disagree Dab.
I have been experimenting with Mortars on one of my cruisers. If I apply thrusters before I fire the Mortar, it moves at an increased speed and becomes highly maneuverable and I have seen it make 90 degree turns and take out fighters. I keep two on my Rheinland cruiser and can use this to take out Nomad fighters which I have a very hard time hitting with my cruiser turrets. It uses about 30% of my energy to fire two. I might could fire three but 2 takes out almost any VHF if they hit and leaves me enough power for my turrets to finish off any straggelers.
Yes, if I fire it from normal speed, it is extremely slow, maneuvers poorly and can almost be dodged by a battleship.
This makes mortars on a Battleship almost useless unles fighting battleships but, it can be a very effective weapon on a cruiser (or prison/luxury liner) if used properly.
My next experiment is to see if this also works for missles, making them more effectice.

The torpedo DOES NOT turn at anything more than 30 degree turns. It couldn't hit his Camara and those things are really sluggish. Then me and Apophis also fought a gunboat vs. gunboat battle. We used light mortars only and no other weapons. About 30-40 mortars were fired at each other. Only 6 hit their intended targets.
I said this then and will again. You people think the mortar is turning fast behind you but the real issue is, that you don't start dodging soon enough. You guys wait until its 50m away before you turn and thrust away. Well when its that close there isn't much you can do except make a long curved turn over the top of the torp (it does usually work, Jack Sparrow did it in his Ravenclaw). I've seen people do the same thing against novas I shoot off. You must start turning at least 400m away from it. Do two spirals toward the thing then break off and the torp flies right by you. I can dodge the thing in a gunboat, so there should be no reason other than poor piloting to stop you from dodging it. You blaming the weapon when it should be blamed on the pilot of the ship its shot at. Its flying fast at you when the shooter thrusts so you THINK its turned fast. Really it has covered so much distance it has turned NORMAL for itself.
Darn,
That shoots down my plans to build a PvP killing pirate cruiser with mortars. Works great on NPCs and so I figured it would work against players too.
Torpedoes are not ment to be used against fighters (unless you are a kamikaze pilot, if you are then yes, torpedoes RULE) I usually launch them after blowing my engine from cruise mod, and that make is a bit hard even for a fighter to dodge.

*ahem* I managed to dodge motrars in a LARGE TRAIN. Ok? They have TOTALY SH**TY tracking. You CAN hit fighters, depending on how good you are at aiming em/ how bad they are at avoiding 'em ;) . I once managed to hit Angel with a nova, I had her shields down as well ^_^ TOTAL FLUKE. I admit it... :P
NPC's do dodge torps, or mabye its just for me... -.- I was flying around outside Gamu blowin' up Nomads for guns 'n' fun, the fighters usually managed to dodge the mortars i threw at them... -.- I had aimed it well. Was goin' right up his arse... well, before he dodged it. -.-' smart nomads... what next...
BTW: Was I the only one who liked it when Super Nova mines had a massive range?

They start dodging when they get close. If you fire the morts at them as they are approaching you, odds are they will not try to dodge the mortar.
And see people? The mortars are not hitting you because they are too good. They are hitting you because you just, to put it bluntly, aren't good at dodging them. If you do really badly go get a friend to help you practice dodging. I learnt when trying to dodge hordes of missiles Angel liked to shoot at me all the time.
