mm write down here
the exact model of your current motherboard, CPU and your old working GPU(not the new not working one) ?
perhaps could be searched optimal solution (in GPU) for your old PC. with even comparison, if there is a point to change it.
Already wrote down the mobo model in the first post, it's Gigabyte H61M-S2PV. The CPU is Intel Celeron G1610 dual core. I've never had a GPU before, except the integrated one that's always been part of this PC. It's called Intel HD Graphics.

I'm willing to do some more digging regarding your problem as I believe the MOBO and GPU should be compatible.
But need more specific info.
Motherboard revision:
You can see the revision in the top left corner (REV: X.X): https://static.gigabyte.com/StaticFile/I.../webp/1000
(It might be also in the BIOS, but I can't be sure about it since I do not have the BIOS at hand to check obviously.)
I don't want a new motherboard because that will require me to reinstall Windows. The computer I have is a second hand former office PC, and I didn't get a Windows CD with it. Basically, mum's corp gave its employees its old computers instead of throwing them into the trash. This was some 7 years ago or so. Buying new Windows will cost me a kidney, and I'm not confident enough in my computer skills to live comfortably with a pirated OS.

pirated OSes are super friendly. in fact, they are more friendly than official releases, because pirate versions make sure to make a life for users more comfortable by offering to disable in one click unnecessary windows things. if needed can give instructions on how to get it.

According to the official Gigabyte website, FE is the oldest BIOS. FF claims to "Improve PCIEx16 graphic card compatibility". That said, I would try to upgrade BIOS to FH at least or even try Fld (the description here is a bit cryptic to me).
However if you consider updating the BIOS, then take your time. Make sure you downloaded the correct file. I might have misclicked something on my side. You know your motherboard model and revision. Check it twice, to be sure.
