Within the main office of Starflier Base sits it's founder, looking out of the window into the storm that surrounds the station, Ames and the whole system. Models of every Starflier vessel is placed along his desk, with a terminal showing incoming and outgoing communications and messages. A couple beeps are heard, indicating to Leon that someone is outside his door. After a press of a button, the door slides open. Albert walks in.
"Ah, Albert. What can I do for you?"
"Hello, Leon. I have something I'd like to run by you, an idea of sorts."
"What have you got for me?"
"Since our facility has perfected the fabrication of Jump Drives, I've had an idea to manufacture a device that could create a rift that stays open for longer than a couple of seconds."
"Go on..."
"We could create a device, an altered Jump Drive, set it up in a secluded location and remotely activate it. You read Halpert's report on the Thuringia System?"
"Yes, the jump hole with a stabilizer ring, right? The one within the minefield?"
"That's correct. We construct the ring, place this device at the center of it and activate the pair in unison from here. I have to run simulations to get both pieces working seamlessly together. If this succeeds, we could create rifts to previously unexplored sectors of space."
"As much as I'd love to entertain this idea and give you the green light for it, it sounds incredibly dangerous. Where would you setup this device? The storms in Kepler surely wouldn't make this project suitable. I don't want this to fail and to affect Starflier Base in any capacity."
"I've only had superficial thoughts about this project. My first reaction to your concern was to set up the device in the Galileo System. Being a neighbouring system and also outside of the storm, and we can surely find a reasonable space."
"What if it fails? What will happen then?"
"You have my word that it won't fail. If it does, I'll make sure the result will not affect our home in any way. I'll run as many simulations as it takes before I'm satisfied with the construction before I begin."
"I'll give you the green light for the simulations. Return to me when you have some good results."
"Thank you."
"Before you head off, could you possibly choose where the rift takes you?"
"Well, without having done the simulations, it's hard to say. I would like to program in a sector of space to explore, our hyperspace library shows we have a lots of data of the House of Liberty. We hypothetically could use that to dial in an unexplored area. In practice if the rift ends up connecting to a random system, known or unknown, that will also suit us. Since it's my first time pondering the idea, it'll be a good learning opportunity for a lot of this."
"I'll leave this in your capable hands. Once we have good results from the sims, we'll touch base and go from there."

Within one of the research and development suites, a team is huddled together around a giant display. Most of the information is displayed in green with a handful of labels showing in red. Albert, alongside another head researcher, examines the passages in red.
"We have to do better than this. Once we figure this out, I can report back to Leon and get his final go ahead."
"What's his problem anyway?"
"He wishes to not have this project backfire and harm this station."
"Can't say I blame him. Did you mention Galileo?"
"I did. He agrees to that, but he wants us to put in the work on these simulations first. So far all the errors have a common overlap, the length and stability of the jumphole."
"Could it be that we don't know enough about the stabilizer ring yet? Halpert's report wasn't exactly detailed."
"At least we have a place to start. Maybe the Technocracy have information on this. I'll re-read Halpert's report and try contact the Rheinland corporation on Weimar too."
"I would not suggest contacting that organisation. But hey, you're the boss man in this room. Your call."
"What's wrong with contacting them?"
"You're going to contact an intelligence organisation about their intelligence. Need I say more?"
"You may be right. However I need information on this ring. If they don't respond or reject my request, then we'll leave it be. The Technocracy will assist us either way."
"To be honest, I'm kind of surprised with what our results are so far. Did you see the result of the second test?"
"I believe I was sleeping during that time."
"We triggered the drive to activate, the rift formed and the drive carried itself through the wormhole and into the target system. Like all the other simulations, the rift was open for a couple of seconds. The outlier was that the drive wasn't destroyed in the process. We've only got that result once."
"Interesting. I'll have to read the logs on that one to see what occurred behind the scenes. Let's move onto test forty seven."
"Understood. Team, let's reset for a new test. Set parameters for wormhole generation to Beta-87."
"What parameter was the second test run under?"
"Epsilon-3."
"Thank you."

A room similar in scale to Leon's occupies a nearby space next to the Research and Development wing of Starflier base. Within this spartan room is a bed, a table with a single chair and a terminal. The terminal's light illuminates Albert's face as he reads and examines the results of the second remotely activated jump hole generation simulation test.

"A negative percentage? I'll reverse that variable..."
A full day was spent on the terminal changing values and setting up custom tests just to see if Albert could stretch the success of Test 2 into a completely successful simulation. A few custom scenarios were denied by the computer, rejecting the simulation due to a guaranteed failure. However, one was accepted by the terminal. A few keystrokes sent the simulation parameter "Starflier-1" to the master simulation platform in the R&D department.
"Very interesting, I'll have to go back to the team with my findings. I may have just figured it out."

A few hours was spent fine tuning the Starflier-1 wormhole generation simulation parameter, all of the information gathered was sent to the simulation test bench before the test was simulated for a final result. Albert arrives at the R&D suite, with the same research team resetting the workspace for a new test.
"Everyone, stop what you're doing. I may have found exactly what we're after."
Albert accesses a nearby terminal and pulls up the newly created generation parameter.
"I never created a test using this. What's Starflier-1?"
"I asked for the results of the second test a while ago. Since the result resembled something we're trying to achieve, I went through and tried to find out what's needed to gain a completely successful simulation. I uploaded it to this terminal for a final test, wanted all of you to see it."
"Well we're already in the middle of a reset. Team, prepare for simulation Starflier-1. Hope this works, Albert. Godspeed."
The team waits impatiently for Starflier-1 to be loaded up. A bunch of code and graphs appear in quick succession on the main display before the remotely activated jump drive and stabilizer ring is loaded into view. Albert looks around the room, gives a nod and runs the test with a keystroke.
A blinking word appears in front of the simulated video feed: SUCCESS.
Silence fills the room, the entire team looks in disbelief as the wormhole generated successfully. Albert nods and smiles, gazing at the wormhole and the spinning ring.
"I thought it'd be orange, not purple. Either way, this is beautiful!"
The main display continues to show this for the next few hours while the team tries to figure out how to celebrate their accomplishment.
