The research based groups I can think of are currently A/)- and SLRC| and maybe HS> to an extent
But every group has a research wing to some degree.
For the best opportunity, I say play with SLRC, since they are neutral and do not get into combat as frequently. Every group has their own ideology, philoshopy, doctrine and understanding, that's up to you what type of politics you like to play along with.
If you like relaxed trading/trucking, get in touch with AWES. If you like a little bit of risk, DTR is known for smuggling, and they have a lot of players so there is always someone around.
OS&C may not be as active as truckers but when you see their liners, you can be sure they provide good RP.
Honestly, though, when you join a faction, you will rarely get to do ingame RP with their characters since the moment you join a group in the game, the group chat is mostly used for ooRP communication. If you can bear flying with a Serenity and not have 5000 units of cargo per run, just stick to Freelancer ID/IFF, fly around, enjoy the sights and say hello whenever you see someone else. People always appreciate it when there are transports that aren't just Powertrader Ivan who doesn't say more than "hi".
If you're looking for something a little spicier than the classic neutral freelancer/Zoner scientist, you could try to go with a science/research oriented Order character. Comes with plenty of potential enemies, of course, but that also provides lots of cool RP opportunities.
A safer option would probably be an IMG character - a geologist or prospector of sorts, perhaps. More opportunities to peacefully trade, too.
