So, after field testing this abomination a bit further I can conclude that mining with an Arrastra before the patch working together with and filling one 5k transport is about 5 times faster than mining big asteroids with the Hegemon single-handedly. Even with all the tips and tricks mentioned in this thread you can't get past the problems of size, slowness and asteroid density (and resource-rich-asteroids-non-density), no matter how fast you could move or strafe in empty space. Filling 2 friends with 5k transports was even faster pre-change. So I call BS on all the reports here claiming otherwise and ask: Please tell me, is there a spot in the Dublin Gold Field where you can apply the old mining technique and the density of small gold asteroids is as high as pre-patch in the 2km radius near the gold buoy?

This is by design, the thing is meant to be a bit unwieldy and if you use a snub to augment the vessel it works much faster.
The new mining system you can make easily 2mil an hour. Pre event prices using gold our miners are making 2.4mil an hour solo with hegemons and now they're making 3mil an hour. Augmenting these only makes it even higher gains with transports or snubs. Overall, this system is not going to be 1:1 with the old fields and the rate does not have to be the same because gold HRC is much higher.
Despite this though I can tell you that experienced hegemon players can fill the hegemon in under 8 minutes on good runs.

Seems like the more people are in the field, the more ore asteroids spawn. This can definitely speed things up. If you are alone you bump your way to the next asteroid in 1,5-3,6 km, and can never be THAT fast.
So just to bump this, TL;DR: I am fine with the mechanics (although the mining field is now stressfull to old systems) and the slowness of the Hegemon (due to the huge cargo hold), but the size of that thing needs to be put back to it's original dimensions.
OR
Make the field less cluttered with dull asteroids, so system strain and maneuverability are better. Not nevessarily Kyushu-like, but like it was before, just with the big ore-asteroids.
As a daily user of it I do not find any issues navigating the Dublin field in the hegemon. You just need to respect the size and not expect it to be flawless.

If you are in a team, wouldn't it be better to skip the Hegemon altogether for a Bretonian Battlecruiser with flak cannons? 1-2 Arrastras, 1 Battlecruiser, 1-2 transports. Has anyone tried the maneuverability of a Battlecruiser in the new mining field compared to a Hegemon?

I can understand the reduced cruising and the lack of tradelane compatibility, but since this ship is supposed to be the new hot shit in asteroid mining, a sleeker handling would have been nice. Cargo space is ok, but every turret the Hegemon equips, that are now necessary for mining too, reduces cargo space. And shields would be nice, when dealing with the Molly presence in Dublin or Leeds where the Hegemon should shine. Bigger ships have shields, so I really can't understand this decision. Last but not least it has too poor results in asteroid mining (again, for the supposed new hot shit in asteroid mining), a 3-4 times bigger yield (factoring in the slow ass time you need to get the Gold Ore to the nearest POB and back into the field and factoring in that due to slowness one could align the rate of this big mining ship with ships like the Arrastra, which I have yet to test in Dublin) would be realistic.
This ship really is an interesting one to be honest.
Nice cargo size but takes many times longer to fill due to lack of mining bonus of smaller mining ships.
Can’t use TL’s
Low cruise speed
If you try and fly it through Tau-23 expect to be there a good while longer than if no asteroids are there- purely down to the fact you get stuck on a lot of asteroids, the invisible ones get you too..
No shield- even a basic low capacity shield would be nice. Over the course of filling up slowly the NPC’s nibble you down to half hull
Where did NPCs attack you? I'm curious cuz I mined a fair bit with the Hegemon and no NPCs ever attacked me. As for the mining bonus, I'm also fairly confident the Hegemon has the 1.2 bonus as well:
[ShipTypeBonus]
ship_class_bonus = 0, 1.2, 1.6, 1.0
ship_class_bonus = 1, 1.2, 1.6, 1.0
ship_class_bonus = 2, 1.2, 1.4, 1.0
ship_class_bonus = 3, 1.2, 1.6, 1.0
ship_class_bonus = 4, 1.2, 1.6, 1.0
ship_class_bonus = 5, 1.2, 1.6, 1.0
ship_class_bonus = 14, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0

Battlecruisers have no strafe and no bonus, and they're basically useless for that. Hegemons get a sizable bonus for killing the asteroid itself, and they have a good buffer cargo for holding things in. A good hegemon can keep two undersized transports relatively happy and the true mining speed of a good solo hegemon is somewhere between 1-2 good transports as well.
The best way to go with group scaling is to either go with hegemon + transport scale or if you want a large operation it is possible to do 1 hegemon 1 fighter and several transports.
