Quote:1.0 - Don't be a dick. It's a game, try to keep it fun for everyone playing it. Behavior that falls within the technical letter of the rules but not the spirit won't be tolerated.
This rule covers toxic and unsporting behavior like ganking. It's difficult to define ganking, but we really want people to think for themselves:
If there's a lone enemy cap left, is it really necessary for me to join in cruiser missile spamming the guy when there's a good mix of seven other heavy caps that's already going to make certain the one guy is dead?
Is it really necessary for me to join in my snub to join the six other snubs that are already chasing that one dude that's left?
Are people going to enjoy playing with us when we've got a bunch of caps sitting on top of an enemy base somewhere instagibbing people as they log on and undock?
We absolutely want everyone in the community to start thinking for themselves - how can we make fights more fun and less shit for everyone involved? It's hard to decide what is ganking or not, so until we have a more elegant solution on how to decide what is sanctionable - we're going to start cracking down on the absolute shittiest of behavior and work our way in until we arrive at a happy medium. It won't be easy or pretty, but we want to shift the community culture to where people think twice about quality of interaction instead of just winning at the cost of thoroughly shitting on other peoples' fun.
Official Factions are given (and will be given more with the coming rework) privileges with the trust and obligation to exercise restraint in its membership and indies - and failure to keep that trust and fulfill that obligation will lead to reconsideration of privileges.
This thread started off as a warning for DTR - and we already made note that we thought this was as good a place as any to start making note of when people do something shitty. After some discussion, we've decided it's better to open the warning up to everyone so DTR doesn't feel singled out - because while the incident that started this happened to involve DTR, they're not special in this regard. We recognize that DTR is a very beginner friendly faction that makes balancing by numbers a bit ambiguous, and that DTR has been on the receiving end of unsporting conduct just as well - but a push to encourage mutually enjoyable gameplay has to start somewhere.
As this is the first time the Staff team is bringing about an official action on this sort of behavior, we will limit this particular instance to a warning - future instances will be met with more tangible consequences for both indies and OFs alike.
To recap, try not to be a dick - and maybe we can make the game more fun for everyone.
If you require evidence, you may request such via PM from a Staff member. Only the accused or an official faction leader of the accused person's faction may request such. Once you have the evidence, and if you wish to dispute it, you may post in the Sanction Thread below. Do not continue PM'ing a staff member, as that will result in your Appeal being denied. If you PM a staff or post in the sanction thread and you are not directly involved, you are consenting to be subjected to the reprisal of my choice which may involve in game repercussions up to a ban. Blaming members of your immediate family, neighbors, friends, pets, and assorted Orcs, Trolls and any other legendary creatures may result in the use of Admin Right #CTE 750AE
I was expecting this post but I hoped for a community-wide warning as done before and with no direct mention of DTR.
ganks have happened since forever. specifying DTR is nothing but ignoring the previous uncountable events of ganking from every corner of this community. This feels like using DTR as a escapegoat - Probably is the case.
Here's a few snaps I collected across the years, each about 6 months apart:
It also doesn't helps that the reporter has no semblance of sportsmanship and you all know that. Additionally, the reporter was in charge of PVP training and etiquette for DTR as the 3ic, didn't do his job, left, and declared a personal crusade against DTR.
Quote:Ever since the Inverness event, the Staff team has issued a warning that, going forward, we will be considering cases of egregious cases of unsporting conduct as a 1.0 violation.
The warning was hidden deep inside an event post which was pretty much invisible for everyone. A proper announcement (that would be replicated through discord's cross-channel announcements) would be much better. additionally, the warning was explicit about only applying to official events, which might've caused players to ignore it even further. I for one, uninterested in the event, was only made aware of this warning today.
As 2IC of The Deterrence, Gatito formally requests evidence of this "egregious enough" particular instance, and the other "several times between then and now" instances to which this case is being compared.
However, We, The Accused, make a motion to have this Official Faction Warning dismissed, removed and replaced with a General Warning to the entire community - in the interest of the well-being and harmony of everyone in the Discovery playerbase.
This is a watershed moment. How diplomatically this is handled will make a difference to many people who love DIscovery. Gatito suggests there is a way to resolve this where we all continue to enjoy playing the game, satisfied that we are being treated fairly and justly, and where each of us can feel positive about wanting to make tomorrow's battle more fun and fair and enjoyable for everyone.
Already, the playerbase was stepping in to work together and get past old grudges, calm one another down and figure out how to solve the situation before this Public Accusation of Exceptional Dishonor was issued.
Again, our motion is to have this Official Faction Warning dismissed, removed and replaced with a General Warning to the entire community.
After some thought, we're shifting this into a general warning to the community. There will be no more general warnings for the community on this subject going forward.

Good decision to make it global. Happy to see a transparent, separate thread, rather than a post buried at page 4 of an event most people didn’t partake in.
The admin/mod team finally willing to mitigate what has been atrocious behavior in recent times is the best course of action if the average PvP experience is to improve. I can only hope that from now on everyone, not just DTR because it’s not a DTR-only issue, will try a little bit better.
Excellent decision and move by the admin team. You are tackling one of the more difficult issues with discovery. I’ve never felt more hopeful about Disco’s future than now. Bravo.
Define us clear obligations in restraint of indies.
Is subsequent, repeated telling to back off in fights sufficient? I'm aware and previously applied FR1 to aggravated misconduct (read ex. towards the end of a fight, drop a cruiser on the last snub duels) by shooting my own indies.
Will this become a necessity to apply to every indie ignoring a call to stand down to balance? How far is your obligation definition here? Just ingame messages? Do I need to bother and find out who is behind a ship and talk them down on Discords too? Should the OF just straight up report its own indies if they misbehave now?
Matters are crystal clear for own OF members but obligations to restraint indies needs me a clear definition or we enable unprecedented spite fuelled trolling against OFs.
Besides that. Thanks. Hope it'll help people wake up a little. Perhaps there won't be the above issues simply due to this warning already.
Okay I guess. Not that I ever stopped trying to keep fights balanced, especially at the end and within my scope, but maybe it'll pull the leash of some of the more hot-headed individuals out there.
Aight since this has turned into something of a discussion thread:

The Staff Team is currently in discussion on how to tackle this issue so I'll give you the take that seems to not be too controversial unofficially so far:
The CURRENT relationship between OFs and indies isn't really clear and I don't think it's fair to expect OFs to be responsible for indies beyond setting an example. The rework that is coming SOON will give additional responsibilities for OFs, along with what we hope will be sufficient privileges to more than make up for the extra responsibility - but until then, just police yourselves and try to remind indies to not be a dick, and that's all we can ask of OFs for now. Indies will be responsible for their own actions, and if it turns out they do something shitty, they'll be handled separately.
