I completely agree with James on this subject. There is no , actual benefit to the RP of the server when your armor costs as much as you ship. The armor upgrades , especially the capital ship ones , should be given a second look.
I would really like to hear how they benefit the community in any way.
I dunno why normal armor upgrades cost up to 15 mil.
But there's a difference between armor upgrades costing that and ships costing same ammount instead.
It's mostly about setting the ships up and changing them.
If VHF would cost 20 mil instead, you need to have those the second you buy it. Now you can buy the VHF for 2 mil and even without armor have a good enough ship for any repping/tagging and making some money. So eventually you might buy the armor.
Then if you decide to change VHF to LF/HF/Bomber/Freighter, you loose just about 1 mil. If the ship costed 20 mil you'd loose 10 instead.
So you while it might seem more logical to up price of the ships, it's more convenient to have the armors expensive.
Don't see anything wrong with capship upgrades. As to why they are actually there? Well some people really like the option to upgrade their ship as they get more money. The real effect of say Cap8 vs Cap7 is by far not worth the money.

This is not what I was getting at whatsoever.. *takes a deep breath*
A VHF with all the kit MINUS the armor upgrade costs about.. 6 million or so. Add another few mil for an inferno or a mini razor. Add the Mark VIII armor which is the standard armor, no two ways about it, thats put the ship over 20 million.
..why? Why does it need to cost 20 million credits to have yourself a combat fighter? Using a cheaper armor upgrade is not an option, most of the fighter pilots on the server use it.
The point I'm trying to put across is that perhaps more people would fly fighters if it wasn't so expensive for, lets face it, a fairly inflexible ship class.
I'm not saying up the price of the ships, they've already been bumped up in price (2.2mil for a Werewolf? Are the Rogues/Mollys feeling the credit crunch or what?), I'm saying that the overall cost of a VHF needs to be looked at again, if thats why the armor is so expensive.
Seeing as it is far more efficient to make money through trading than through missions, most people will have that 20 mill to set up a fighter, anyway...how many times has anyone built up a character through missions alone?
(at, say, 5 minutes per mission (assuming we don't take the "kill 20 fighters, good work, but there are another 20 at the next waypoint" missions...), with an average turnover of probably about 30k (having accounted for explosive use...missions and lag are much harder to win without missiles), you're looking at 1,000 (that's one thousand) missions for a UAU mk 8...)
Anyways, as Jamez says...why do fighters cost 20 mill? Especially when they are able to take on so few other shipclasses...for only twice that, you can get hold of a gunboat which does all a VHF will do and more (for a start, it won't lose to another VHF, unless there is a huge skill gap...).
But personally I do not think it's too much at all. 20 mil is at max 1 hour trading with cargo ship of more than 4k cargo. That's pretty short time.
It is quite possible to finance upgrade from missions as well, including loot it's quite normal to get 1 mil per mission in Alpha, Gamma, Delta and similar systems. So that's 15 missions.
Gunboats now cost about 35 million, if you include at least normal upgrade and the necessary equipment (thruster, cm, cd) you are at some 55 mil. Then even normal turrets will cost you some 3 mil if you want razors/pulses/missiles it's much more. So let's say 60 mil.
60 mil is a lot more than 20 for a fighter. 60 mil for a ship that any fighter/bomber can simply thrust from. Again don't see any problem in prices.

perhaps we should make universal 8 so expensive that some people would actually fly mk1 to 7

Wasn't the idea supposed to be the removal of the lower , unusable classes of armor ? Since getting the mod smaller is a good thing and the fact that people use only the 2.5 armor upgrade. We can pretty much remove the rest in favour of mod size.
Also , my main issue is with the capital class armors. Currently , it doesn't come to anything else then to who has more spare time to trade for one and beat the rest of the players who may not think that doing nothing but trading all day long is a good idea.
In anything short of the biggest bs that simply can't dodge anything (Zoner Juggy, Corsair Dread, RH BS), it kind of doesn't make much of a difference whether you mount cap 6 or 8.

Yes, it's a pretty short time if you have a cargo ship that costs 60 million? I'd actually like to build chars on their own, but I'm not either:
Doing missions for the rest of my life
or
Trading my way up to big cargo ship only to then get the cash in an hour and have to sell the thing - every enterprising pilot has to trade these days?
Seems to me like the general consensus is 'get a big cargo ship and you'll be fine'.. no wonder we have powertraders with an attitude like that.
