I've had to hold hostages quite a lot recently; holding trade ships hostage to keep the law at bay while I'm pirating. Far too often the trader ends up trying to shoot his way out when backup arrives though. So far all the traders that have tried this have died, so I haven't been holding back on my part of the deal. The idea is that if they pay you, you cut and run though. Try to get away before the law realise you've released the hostage, otherwise you're really screwed.
Don't try to extort the lawfuls though, just get the cash from the trader. If you ask for money from the police, they get ancy and just wade in and hope you don't have time to murder the trader, which all too often you do.
I'mm just wondering, should I save up for a gunboat or so, my char is a freelancer so yeah, I think it would would be more useful in terms of firepower but I'mm afraid the escaping would be a little difficult

In this case I mentioned above, I'd recommend a bomber. You need to be able to make a quick escape and doge fire. The GB also deals lower DPS than bombers, but deals it constantly, rather than when the torpedo fires, but the torpedo is more or less critical to your threats of killing the guy unless you get 'X'.
That was fun, in the end I got bored and ditched them outside the Battleship Norfolk.
[17:45:39] Wolfs Ghost (Murphy): Tom, you have problems. Go kill yourself.
[19:25:12] Johnny (Jam): Tomtom, I will beat you with a spoon.
[14:22:56] Prarabdh Thakur: KILL HIM WITH A SHEEP.
[17:40:48] Eagle (Junes): Tom should be slapped with a spoon.
[11:32:18] Warspite: Thank you for being so awesome Tom. <3
[18:17:36] Metano: I love you tomtom
[20:06:24] Warspite: I will seriously give you epic head.

I don't mind negotiating in a hostage situation (NPC pilots) and if it's a reasonable demand I have been known to pay. You cant expect law men too pay huge sums of credits to a NPC farmer. Johann is correct, quickly the lawful's will be broke. If you wish to avoid a "pew pew" encounter in a hostage situation. Make your ransom demand reasonable.
