For me, traders dont need crew. In RL train/truck drivers manage without any crew so in the age of inter-galactic travel i find it hard to believe that long distance transport ships would require a crew. Whoever managed to invent such a ship would become an instant trillionaire in the Disco universe.
Crews at the stations i land at would load/unload. All i see my trader doing is docking with jump gates.

Though my explorer ship is laden with all the things you would need for such an undertaking.

Each to their own i guess. I think ultiamtely everyone has a power trader, very few people would stock a 5K transport woth 4K of fuel/water/oxygen etc. Its where you draw your line in the sand at the end of the day. Everyone does it to some degree. Its what you do with your ill gotten gains that reflects more on you i think.

Here's another viewpoint to the Fuel "issue".

Most ships are very big.

Why would trading ships designed to carry things long distances carry fuel in the Cargo bays?
Would not they put the fuel in the fuel tanks, designed to fit sleekly inside the ships hull, instead?

For battleships I can see people carrying crew.

The most I do is food, crew and water. I don't usually bother about fuel.
All these are really only "atmosphere" touches. There's no hard and fast rules about them.
(And there shouldn't be. No lawyering to other people about how they have to have crew/food/oxygen/water/scientists.)

I find it easier to concentrate on role-play with items on board. Also, I believe it allows for much more Role-Play possibilities. I once pirated a guy in Dublin for two blocks of tobbaco... was feeling like smoking at the moment:)

However, all this goes when I have enough cash on my char, and really tends to go out the window when I get blown up in a n OORP manner. Then, I just grind to get myself back to comfortable levels of cash, and then... here we go again, flying around, having fun.

I do RP on my trader but I don't carry any RP-commodites in the cargohold.

Reason:

My ship has a crew..but they are on the bridge,in the engine room or on the turret controls..they don't sit around between gold and drillheads.
And me beeing a shipper, I regulary land on bases or planets where I stock up on fuel and stuff. My crew gets a break and food there, too.

Basicly I see the commodity space as "commercial-cargo-only" space and not the space where my crew works and stores their handluggage.

But in a liner, cruiser, battleship or any other ship that spends long time in space without docking regulary I would put stocks and goods for the ship and the crew in the cargohold , too.

I carry crew members, the main reason being to show how many there are. It helps my thoughts stay consistent. I generally don't take other stuff consistently, as it's actually really hard to figure out how much. I mean, how far does a unit of H-Fuel actually get you? If I sorted that out I might.

Various fighters carry things if they're sold on the bases. Cardamine, Synthetic Marijuana, Blood Diamonds, and food are the ones that come to mind. I also used to take a History of Sirius item around in my escort. I said it was a book on history to read while he waited for the trade ships to load and unload.

I carry one Junker pilot, and one Golden Chrysanthemum pilot. They represent myself and my partner, respectively. I also usually have an amount of scrap metal sitting in the back when I'm not running cargo.

For my RepEx character I have trading cargo only.

For my LR- smuggler I have other commodities to try and hide the illegal things in my hold.

[17:45:39] Wolfs Ghost (Murphy): Tom, you have problems. Go kill yourself.
[19:25:12] Johnny (Jam): Tomtom, I will beat you with a spoon.
[14:22:56] Prarabdh Thakur: KILL HIM WITH A SHEEP.
[17:40:48] Eagle (Junes): Tom should be slapped with a spoon.
[11:32:18] Warspite: Thank you for being so awesome Tom. <3
[18:17:36] Metano: I love you tomtom
[20:06:24] Warspite: I will seriously give you epic head.

My traders all have a lot of different commodities on board besides the cargo. I have no problem with scanning the cargohold and seeing the ship's pilots, fuel and other things in there. When you scan an NPC-fighter you can see the pilot in the "cargohold" there, too.

Besides the roleplay issue of commodities I also imagine a pirate, scanning my trader and having to decide if there's any cargo on board at all, has a lot more problems in doing this while looking through a bunch of other stuff.

That cuts out the 2milordais, of course (Although I have to admit, I NEVER meet those. I know only good roleplaying pirates!).

Question about the pilots and crewmembers in the cargohold:

What happens when you're ship gets destroyed and the one who destroyed it tractors in the pilot unit or even shoots it?Or what if a pirate demands your crewmembers?

Do you Rp that out?Do you start a new charakter because the previous one died?Would be intresting...like the Hardcore mode in Diablo II.

Edit: Did I kill the thread? Sorry I didn't want that! Please keep replying!

No I don't thin k you did.. and that's up to you if you want to start a new character lol But I'D never do it. Too much work thinking about the roleplay of a character and all that stuff.
