Someone explained it thusly: the IDs represent different codes sent out by the ship to identify it to others, that work as a more reliable system than IFF on account of being near-impossible to fake. Lawful codes are a means for lawfuls to identify each other. You scan a ship and verify that yup, that's an Ageira code, or yup, that's a Bretonia Police code.
Unlawful IDs are codes that have been flagged as members of certain groups, like a "danger: this pilot has been flagged as a member of the Golden Chrysanthemums" or "this pilot has been known to attack transports". It could also, like the lawful codes, be a way for members of unlawful groups to identify each other: "good, you have a Lane Hacker code, you're one of us".
Civilian IDs are just generic codes built into every ship. You scan a civilian ship, it sends you a generic "I'm a civilian vessel" code.
Freelancer and Merc IDs might be a sort of advertising code. "Hey, everyone," the code says, "I'm a Freelancer/Mercenary looking for work".
Indie Trader IDs are a different kind of "civilian" code that has, over time, become associated with unaffiliated traders.
I call ID identification codes.. you cant get around them without mentioning them.. i avoid calling it ID.. basicly same thing whats pieguy doing.
While IFF and things related to it are based on transponders that are easy to broke.. like when you see Police tagged Corsair or something..
Pirate, Smuggler, Vigilante.. i do scan but i act them on IFF.. if Pirate has Rogue IFF thats enough for me to make him leave area around lane.. if he has FL IFF i would pass right by him.. but if he broke lane and i heard him pirating he is in trouble them.. if i see smuggler with some legal cargo nothing.. nothing happens.
there is a slight problem with going strictly by iff- me for example. i dont like allieing myself with a specific faction, because i prefer to branch out and have a little more freedom, to an extent. any faction i interacted with other characters were intolerant of people of others that wernt in their faction, even if i was green to them, and i've been treated with extreem hostility as people asserted a demanded dominance.. but the problem i do have is the iff in addition to the id.
right now, i'm id'd as a smuggler, and iff'd as a junker. i had a pirate escorting me as per the info card.
earlier we had a couple of navy boys show up and imeadiatly start firing on my escort without rping, they didnt even bother to scan.. but one of the big things i got out of that is one of the guys in the logs told me "junker, why are you attacking" and they ended up killing me as well.. but i guess the point of referencing that is that people arnt scaning.
if everything has been moded.. perhaps the id info could be displayed under the iff in a future mod release? simply stating their profession, since people refuse to scan anyway. of course though, i dont know how tough interface edits would be.

The current system is fine if someone does not have an IFF he does not belong to. Like the 'police' guy mentioned in my initial post. Or you. 98% of the times IFF and ID matches. If not, it's usualy have a reason. In your case it's perfectly reasonable to suspect that you are a junker (or at least realy closely related to them) even if I scanned your ID.
The solution of your problems is the /droprep command. Type it until you have no/freelancer IFF.
if need be, mark freelancers as mercs for this( same thing on the info cards anyway), trader if they have a smuggler or trader id, unlawfull for pirate and similar faction class's, and allow a way to display an "Unaffiliated" iff if they prefer to be an unaffiliated merc, smuggler, or pirate.
Got rid of the unnecessary copy of your old post for you.

An interface edit like that... Would probably need the FL source code. Which we don't have.
well, can yout hink of a possible solution? because the only one i can see right now is for some one like me, to drop rep constantly to keep my iff off to avoid some one thats not scanning form imediatly calling me an outcast or junker (expensive.) then agan, half the time people seem to use iff as an excuse to tell some one to go away, or to kill them, as opposed to actually rping a situation.

Fixed the passage on the wiki, if someone got a better way of saying it, feel free to edit it or send me a PM with your exact wordings so I can re-edit the thing.
