Lemme guess, two of you against one Shire? One shire, properly armed, munches gunboats in single combat. If it's two gunboats on one Shire, the Shire usually dies.
Thanks for all the responses. I hope this thread helps out other players with the same problem.
As for my personal situation:
I was flying a bomber, and was mostly waiting and waiting at tradelanes, until fighters (both authority and escorts) came in to chase me off.
I am in it for the high adventure and not for the credits (Great post there, Magpie), but it just feels like it's mostly waiting and being patient. I guess it IS, and I was expecting the wrong things.
That said, however, after making this thread I tried pirating on my Red Hessian Army character and had some great RP with Daumann miners. It wasn't so much pirating as it was them secretly funding the revolution.
I'd make a little recap of what I've learned from you all so far, but I don't think I could do it justice. Please go on discussing what makes pirating fun!

I like to make pirates chase me because then it might give someone less fortunate than me time to go down that lane and not get pirated. Sure I may pay the pirate his fee as well but at least he doesn't have to pay it. Also I RP a weakling running from a fight, it's good fun. Pirates enjoy me.
Group of VHF's and HF's are always more fun to pirate with. And it has the best capability to defend themselves.
Pirating itself, yes its quite a hard job, often you can get bored waiting. Thats why try to pick up a faction wich has a wider zoi, so you could patrol around, changing your pirating zone. Corsairs would be a perfect solution here.
The Black Sails have their methods for not getting bored all the time.
1. Get in group with others, that let you chat with friends, a big time saver.
2. Pirate a complete way by groups of 1 VHF + 1 PTransport.
3. Share your money when you get some. When you give the money it's hard, but when you receive it from the group they block the second access you're pushing the traders into, you're happy.
4. Raid your enemies when the systems are empty and you start get bored ! Your titan/sabre is deadly even to your enemies.
