I know people who live from scrap-minig just fine. They'd be mad at me I guess if I'd tell how. I did not heard it got nerfed since the last upgrade, but who has the patience to track a junker.

I love this Idea. Maybe call it Raw Iron, or Basic Metals, or refined Scrap. That could be sold at all Smelter's,and junker base's, as they mine the scrap, drop it off, smelt it,and sell the new product.
Hey Xoria, sorry about leaving scrap in a state of flux. I flipped the switch on the scrap system pretty much the day before my life turned on its head.
Scrap is a sort of weird bird. One thing that I learned whilst puzzling over the idea of breaking it down into something you could practically shoot is that it suffers somewhat for being everywhere. Gallia is practically swimming in scrap. Furthermore its value is somewhat questionable at best.
The system I concocted targets metal poor regions as consumption points (borderworlds, some smelters, a spot in Kusari etc) with drops nearby nerfed to the best of my ability. Basically yonder shipyard by Malta would be a good consumption point because alloys, hull panels or what have you would fetch a somewhat decent price due to the cost of manufacturing new materials versus using second hand.
Now to get to the point that isn't obvious (the above is in place for Tenacity's benefit, not yours Xoria.)
While there is a glimmer of logic in picking up floating debris in space to be smelted down, re-refined or whatever recycling process is to be found in the future the whole buy/sell aspect of the commodity is troublesome. So I would suggest taking a step back and looking at 'scrap' from another point of view.
I would suggest that Junker bases or what have you sitting in debris fields would sell, rather than whatever flotsam they catch in their net, refurbished or re purposed premium stuff. Second hand engines, almost new fighter pods (don't mind that spill on the seat by the hole it's, uh, wine.) and other sundries.
Think a junkyard, where scrap metal would be a busted door and this "new" version of scrap being the refurbished engine from a 1976 Mustang which was junked because the owner didn't want to bother replacing a thrown transmission.
This premium scrap would be acquired from Junker bases and the like and shipped off to shipyards/what have you where they might find new homes in the frames of the countless civilian ships floating about Sirius.
The following comments come from a player who ONLY plays Junkers, so unless I'm the one smoking crack, I hope to have a good grip on this...
Careful reading of the Junker ID, Junker descriptions (wiki, infocard, etc) and elsewhere give me the feeling that any signifigant change in the current system would require some heavy re-writing of Junker cannon.
While I agree that things like Hull Panels, Engine Components, etc. would be excellent things to sell at Junker bases (I've been wondering why they weren't) it's clear that the Junkers, unlike ALG who merely pick up the trash, retask it. The infocards say so quite clearly.
We make it into Recyclers, Salvagers, CSVs, and myriad other things (including slave chains and other unsavory things, but I digress). If a few loads get brought to smelters belonging to legit Companies who can legitimately sell 'refined alloys' made from the scrap, well that just gives us good cover.
Im afraid that IMO the ability to sell 'refined alloys' or anything short of actual items made from scrap at Junker bases would effectively neuter us, and push us finally into the realm of 'the-good-guys'. We're not traders, we're not huge fans of traders and thier legitimate ways, and we sincerely don't want thier traffic at our bases. That just puts our 'other' operations at risk of discovery
So...to answer the question, My vote would be to let the Junkers junk. - i.e. let us Junkers mine scrap from space. If we NEED a new currency, lets make it retasked items, like refurbished ship parts and systems.
How about selling salvaged and repaired weapons belonging to other factions?
Again, however, If you look closely at the Junker lore, no self-respecting Junker is going to welcome any more legal traffic to his bases than is absolutely neccesary to maintain a bare semblance of legitimacy.
What Finnegan said is quite correct. I guess the in-game factor whizzed over my head...
While being able to sell refurbished parts at our stations would fit with our cover RP of ye old scrap collector, it would also make our bases a viable trading spot for everyone, be them lawful or unlawful. And we don't exactly welcome the police into our contraband-filled bases with open arms.
