A Fascism based Faction...

Fascism is always labelled as NAZISM since the Nazis.

Fact of the matter is, plenty of faction in Discovery are fascist, people just don't know it, because the most extreme fascists - Nazis - are somehow the yardstick to measure fascism against. "A demographic is defined by its extremes." You don't measure from middles, you measure from edges. By far, the most noticeable edges are the ones furthest out... Nazis in the group of fascism, for example.

I would go so far as to say that fascists are indeed one of the more common examples of factions in Discovery.



And there ain't much wrong with that, it's just another way of doing things.

Nazi's weren't TECHNICALLY Fascists, they were National Socialists. Fascists are much more authoritarian than National Socialism was back then. A very good example of a Fascist nation was the Empire of Japan, you can't oust a holy emperor over a sort of elected leader of a party, aka Hitler. This doesn't count in the government raping off course.

I see a few problems with this idea, and they are hard if not impossible to deal with

As you openly say its a fascist group you run the risk of attracting a few not so popular groups to it. Trolls, Flamers, Neo-Nazis and Nazi Sympathizers.

Careful screening is definitely needed if this faction is created, but there is a risk some will slip through the cracks of the screening process. the other issue is of players getting offended, Communism is frowned on by some groups but is still legal and many are ok with it.
Nazis however committed so many horrible atrocities that affected people world wide that a lot of people will disapprove of it. though this faction would not necessarily be Nazis and may not even act like them people will always equate Fascism to Nazis. plus if the behavior of the characters do resemble Nazis your going to have a lot more complaints than 2-3 on this thread.

i don't mind the idea of fascism in game, it could open interesting RP options, just make sure all members are ready for the mobs of angry ships and the OORP threats, they will not be liked....

Every nation on Earth has done things horrible to people all over the world. Might makes right, and thats why you don't here about all the nasty little things the winners did in WWII. I'm no Nazi sympathizer, but anyone who has taken advanced world history courses understands that good and evil nations only exist in comic books and movies. Everyone is a bad guy, all the time. ;)

Second the ideology of Fascism is no different from any other form of government. It has good, and strong points, along with it's ups and downs. Just equating the idea of Fascism with Nazism is stupid, because the Nazi didn't even practice true fascism. Mussolini did, and it was more of a corporatism in sense.
I can tell you, the ideas of corporatism have merit, depending on how you view the situation. They can turn an entire countries economy around, in a very short period of time.

In any case, take a faction and play it in a fascist manner.
Or come up with some ideals for a new faction to go by that directly tie into current roleplay. (For instance, growth of fascism in Bretonia. The UK experienced a growth in it throughout the 20th and 19th century, including during the wars.)

If people will start to role play as fascists or nazi`s I might leave the server I don't like to play together with neo-nazis or nazi sympathizers and trust me I wont be the only fellow.
So, for gods sake USE the factions that we already have in the game, aren't these enough for you people ?

@ Darth Striker, Linkus: Yes i realise that other nations have done many horrible things, and i in no way say that they didn't. One key difference was that the horrors committed in the concentration camps were televised and recorded, many recordings include piles of bodies in pits and rooms, people being shot over pits, beatings, gassing's etc. on top of that many surviving victims told of these camps. The graphic nature of this media and the scale of its viewing was the first of its kind and for that reason stuck in the minds of most people.

I believe it would add a good element to game play, though like i said, many will not be able to see them as just fascists, they will always see nazis and there is nothing we can do to change their minds.

I suggest making a poll on this, asking the Disco users if they would be ok with a Fascist group.

And though i doubt this faction would set out to be like Nazis exactly, it would be sad to upset someone who was closely tied to those events because of a misunderstanding in the groups goals/origins.


EDIT: Internity's post proves my point , this faction falls into a moral grey area and many people can not, will not or don't want to see the difference between Fascism and the Nazis. I can entirely understand this. and i just fear that over time this faction will slowly decay into a nazi group. i really suggest abandoning this idea now, its to much of a touchy subject to make into a role play faction and there is a risk this will damage discoveries reputation. the message 'Discovery Allows you to play the role of a fascist for fun' is not good publicity.

First of all, if you about to start such idea, you need to settle on one.

Or it will be nationalism, facism or new kind of nazism. All of they differ by one case or another. For example nationalism cares about the etnic basis the most, country serves the nation. Facism differs from Nationalism becouse it places the country it self above the individuals of the nation, also leader cult, and it's more political than based on ethnic concept. Also, Facist do not support racial/social or other kinds of extermination like bolshevists or nacists. And nacizm.. well I guess there is no reason to talk about it much.

For radical ideas we have xenos in Lib. You don't need a new faction.

For nationalism there are Red hessians, Kusarians as a whole.


Not for those who just call any right movements nazi ones, and would feel insulted. I can understand that. But there are things which you need to step over. For example, I think a lot of peeps of senior disco players remembers my pointless struggle versus SCRA symbol usage. You know why? Honestly I think I feel same about those, as ethnic jew whos family suffered holocaust seeing svastika published.

But later I came to realize that it's just a game. Even if there are hidden sypathizers out there for exmaple with stalins cartoons in avatars or else, I don't care much. They are not around me. And propably it's not their fault they are morons who still thinks that those ideas are good which already failed the world once yet leaving still bleeding wounds for someone.

And.. damn. where else I could shoot a commie guy and not get arrested : D for it?


Also it feels a bit unfair from my point of few to use double standarts for similiar things.

They're worse than any fascist, and have real-life similarities to the likes of Josef Fritzl, Charles Manson, Jack the Ripper et cetera.

If we can have all them, why can't we have fascists?

Hell, the SCRA used to have a ship named after Stalin. If we didn't get told to GTFO for that, why not fascists?

Plus, who doesn't want the chance to play this guy?




Anyway, if anyone is going to be fascist, it should be either Outcasts or Corsairs or a part thereof, seeing as fascism is an Italian idea.:P

the message 'Discovery Allows you to play the role of a fascist for fun' is not good publicity.

Discovery also allows you to RP pirates, smugglers, ecoterrorists, corrupt rent-a-cops and raving Stalinist commies for fun. Fascists would be saints compared to some of these, especially if you consider that fascism, while certainly a rejectable form of government, does not necessarily come with Nazism and genocide.

You know, the beauty in role-playing lies in that one is able to act as a character that does things you'd never ever do in real life - be that casting magic, flying space ships or being a fascist commissar. Thus, in my opinion, whether it's a fascist or a communist or a nazi you're going to RP - RP it well and make it fit the server's theme and there's nothing wrong with what you're doing.
