A pirate sees a transport, stops it, pulls up next to it.
Pirate: "Hand over the plunder, or I blow you to kingdom come!"
Trader: "Oh god no, I have a family, take it all! *Squeals abit*"
Now see, where our piracy doesn't make sense is, it's glorified taxing..
Things to note:
Trader should be afraid for his life, he only has one after all. This is a transport out of hundreds of thousands, that's why the pirates can afford to be ruthless, and how this one robbery doesn't effect head office..
Pirates rob you for all you're worth, or atleast, pirates in history do. They don't admire your cargo, then demand you go to the bank with them and withdraw cash. I know we have the fancy neural-net, but... it's still pretty much more like paying a tax.
Pirates do not settle for second best, they take everything of value and leave.
Pirates are not triggar happy, if the death-threats are to enforce your 'srsbsns' attitude, it's only to show them that you intend to kill them if they don't comply... This is also the traders fault, people cannot RP for fudge in a situation like that.
Our piracy - more like a protection racket.
Seriously, ever notice how our pirates just threaten the safety of the trader, demanding a fee to live?
That is protection money, kinda... And we have the respawn mechanic, which removes the Traders actual losses, and makes it more of a "Oh well.." kinda thing.
I suppose it's one of those things we have that just doesn't make sense....
Though the Sails (Or OPG of the past) that do incite fear, and there is cargo piracy... but you really see how our piracy... kinda sucks?
Not another pirate-bashing thread, just simply pointing out how odd our system is, and how we could possibly play it out differently for a change?
Game mechanism make it hard.
Rule 0.0 would make me banned at the moment I pirate how I really want to.
I invite everyone they want to have a good fun in piracy to join the Black Sails, the Buccaneers, the Lane Hackers or the Liberty Rogues (I mean the real factions, not just having tag and ID). They're the 4 only groups giving a real meaning to the piracy in Discovery.
That let you the choice of the place you want to pirate in.
Well Piracy is fine now with big ore shipments the trader must be crazy to do it alone without escorts or without other trader at least.Cargo Piracy is harder as give me $$ or die! But it is essential for a good pirate to know the value of the traders goods.I have simple rule when the trader acts normal and stops after the line drop and first CD I tax him around 10% if he try to run and I need to CD him twice and he starts using CM it is 25% If he don't want to talk much or he don't talk at all 50%.If he start shooting or try to ignore my request or start crying for help I just destroy him. The only problem in piracy is because the trader can tell you I prefer to die rather to pay and wait to be killed, that's why when transport class ship dies the repairs must be around 5 % of the ship sell value for example new train 180 mill ,sell value second-hand NPC dealer 90 mill 5 % of it make 4,5 mill so it is not nice to die lose cargo and pay 4,5 mill in order to repair the ship after that.I am sure that this can be implemented somehow.;)It will make traders more hmm careful. So more escorts will be hired and people will be able to RP as insurance company.
this was my 0.02c

Did you ever notice piracy hasn't stayed exactly the same since greek times to today? Pirates in Freelancer aren't gonna use tactics of 5th century pirates.

I'm just really amazed every time I see someone discussing "role play" piracy, "real life" piracy, "rules" for piracy, etc.
Its so very strange how there's plenty of room to debate and argue and all that with regards to what should and should not be done in-game with piracy ... but there's no room to do so with other aspects of the game ... such as ... oh I dunno ... bounties and such.
Pirate demands 10 mil and trader complains the pirate is asking too much ... we get a thread about OORP pirates. Trader then posts 50 mil bounty on the pirate. *facepalm*
