First off, I'd like to apologize for starting this flame war.
Second, I've got a tentative design worked out based on the Sabre, which could be scaled up into a gunboat or down into a bomber. (As soon as I figure out Milkshape.)
Third, the Outcasts are probably /the/ unlawful faction most likely to have a wide array of ship types. They have an extensive engineer corps, they have a home world, and they are ROLLING in dough. Sure, not every faction needs an extensive array of ships, but it makes sense in the case of the Outcasts.
Now, could somebody please explain what the difference is between a gunboat and a bomber and a fighter? Seems like a bomber would be one or the other. :/
My current goal with this thing is to make something to bridge the gap between the Sabre and the Destroyer. Something somewhat heavy, but not so heavy that you couldn't use it for piracy or Cardamine runs. As I said, something of a "fast attack vessel."
EDIT: Wow. Holy wow. Vapor, you win. My only suggestion would be to slap some Sabre-type wings on the sides (to mount some guns on), but that may or may not work anyways. Um. You win. I want to fly one of those. Now.
A bomber is basically a VHF with half the agility, a LOT more armor, tons of nano/shield bots/batts, and two torpedo slots, instead of one. The torpedoes are what make the ship powerful. Not veru useful against fighters. Which is why I always keep a steady dose of Nuclear mines to drop at them.
A Gunboat is the opposite. Not good against other caps, except other GBs if you outfit it that way. But exceptional against fighters (which is why you need 2 elite pilots against a crappy GB pilot, just to win). They have fast firing, and fast-moving turrets that are useful in shooting down the fighters. GBs are nearly unstoppable death to bombers, dual torps or no. They are the most agile capships, and really quite decent in that agility.
Bombers are small around VHF size, takes out capships. (Good bomber pilot can take a bad BS pilot down in a 1v1.)
GBs are half the size of cruisers, and take out fighters/bombers.'
If you wish to be able to carry Cardimine, than a GB would be best.
And yes, Vapor wins. And that HAS Sabre wings. One of the pictures shows them.
Also, I meant /more./ On the sides. And smaller. Though now that I think about it, it would make the ship look like a walrus, so it's a bad idea anyway.
Dab, GBs are not hard to take out in a bomber. You just have to strafe, and use CMs a lot.
Like the time I killed the SCRA GB. Easy, it usually tries to outmanuver you, so just turn into it. Or if it goes into turret view, don't attack in straight lines, just go to max range for Novas and fire.
I am a long-absent Supreme Commander, Executive Commander, Grand Admiral, Fleet Admiral, and Captain in the mighty Hellfire Legion. I have returned, and am on an urgent mission from Drake Thastus to return the Legion to its former glory, and to claim the galaxy for its own. Only then will I be able to rest.
RP Story (Still deciding whether or not to finish)
I think pirate gunboats were to have more cargo space, to be able to carry the boot. Now for smugling ships you can use whatever transport available, that is capable to dock at lawful bases and carry a pirate faction ID.
Oh my dear god, Vapor, you are an absolute genius. That hull you made could easily be the replacement for our Outcast Destroyer (Which is ugly and drives me insane). Somebody give that man some money-we should have that skinned and put in the mod ASAP.
And yes, Dab, I realize that you are the world's biggest Eagle freak. Apologies, and I did say no offense. That's just my opinion. Worship as you wish.
...the Saber still looks cooler.

Alright, come fight MY GB. I'll show you what happens when the CMs run out, while my missiles don't.
Dab is right, GBs are nasty, and that that's the point. They're for keeping fighter/bombers off the battleships. Now we have destroyers (Minus Bretonians [shudder]), but the GB is still the most effective anti-fighter around without true missile-spam.
