Go with a Hunter Gunship, those things are mean. I don't doubt you can roleplay a capital, considering you went out of your way to state it on the forums, but bombers and well flown gunboats will eat a capital ship alive.
If you go the gunship (bottlenose) route, don't use guns on it, but rather one rearfire missile and a combo of pulses/razors.
If you go with a bounty hunter gunboat (orca) then get a full gun loadout instead, but regular hunter turrets. Cerbs and Solaris are pretty well useless.

IT'S A TRAP!
I -hated- mine when I bought it. I owned it for literally 30 minutes and sold it back to the dealer straightaway.
I see you've talked to admiral Ackbar
But yes, it is dreadfully doomed without escorts. So Legion, there you have it. imho, stick with an Orca or GS. the BC won't be able to do what you want to do with it.

At least all ya'll set him in half the right direction.
Thirty degrees too short.
The man asked for information and he got a pretty clear, reasonable and accurate picture of the pitfalls he would run into in a bounty hunter capital ship from experienced players who have been through the many changes the shipline and the ID system have undergone.
Yes, he would need a specific ID; yes, that ID would sharply restrict him in achieving his intended goal and gameplay; yes, he would soon find himself disappointed when his group of capital ships encountered a few bombers. None of the above were unhelpful or deliberatly discouraging in any way but were based on what actually happens currently in the game - no mention of whether or not that should be the way, mind.
Whether or not he would enjoy hunting people in a gunship or a fighter is a matter of opinion. Once prepared for the weaknesses and downfalls of piloting the bigger ships (and there are many, many more for the BHG shipline - more so than others I would suggest), he may come to realise that you can't always get what you want in Discovery, but you can get what you need.
The player will face the same restrictions that any player would face flying one of those ships. I'm just glad he had the wisdom to ask beforehand and got a measured and helpful response.
